Unearthed Taxpayer Funded Gun Study Ordered By Obama Blows Holes In Every Gun Control Argument

President Obama commissioned a $10 million study to look at crime deterrents in January 2013, and what it says about gun control blows everything liberals and Democrats have ever said about guns out of the water, reports CNS News.

“Self-defense can be an important crime deterrent,” concluded a study by the Centers for Disease Control (CDC) mandated via executive order by President Barack Obama. The study’s findings also question the effectiveness of gun-control measures.

CNS News reports that the study’s findings include:

Gun-use is the safest of studied “self-protective strategies,” Suicide accounts for most firearm deaths, Felons who use guns very seldom obtain their guns by stealing them, and There is no evidence that gun restrictions reduce gun violence.

“Studies that directly assessed the effect of actual defensive uses of guns (i.e., incidents in which a gun was ‘used’ by the crime victim in the sense of attacking or threatening an offender) have found consistently lower injury rates among gun-using crime victims compared with victims who used other self-protective strategies,” the CDC study, entitled “Priorities For Research to Reduce the Threat of Firearm-Related Violence,” states.

Researchers also found that the majority of firearm deaths are from suicide, not homicide.

“Between the years 2000 and 2010, firearm-related suicides significantly outnumbered homicides for all age groups, annually accounting for 61 percent of the more than 335,600 people who died from firearm-related violence in the United States,” the study reports.

“Most felons report obtaining the majority of their firearms from informal sources,” adds the report, while “stolen guns account for only a small percentage of guns used by convicted criminals.”

The report expresses uncertainty about gun control measures, stating that “whether gun restrictions reduce firearm-related violence is an unresolved issue,” and that there is no evidence “that passage of right-to-carry laws decrease or increase violence crime.” It also stated that proposed “gun turn-in programs are ineffective.”

Instead, researchers proposed gun safety technologies such as “external locking devices and biometric systems” to reduce firearm-related deaths.

Perhaps the Democrats need to look at their own studies before their try to ban assault rifles or semi-automatic weapons and instead look at the situation from a common sense standpoint.

“It also says that the number of defensive gun uses are between 500,000 and three million a year.”

Wow, I had no idea it was that many.

That would make a good meme. I hope somebody creative will get on it.

Mostly buying them from other criminals, many of whom can buy guns legally or stole them. That’s what they mean by informal purchase.

“If the criminals aren’t stealing the guns then how are they getting them?”

Buying them with the proceeds of criminal activities?

I’m surprised it was still able to even BE unearthed.

I spent 15 years in Law Enforcement, still waiting for that law to be passed that is going to stop a criminal from shooting someone, if they really want to.

Buying them from someone who bought them from someone who stole them 5 years earlier.

NRA says between 1.25 Million - 2.5 Million instances per year where someone used a firearm to stop a crime and save a life. This includes showing a firearm as well as firing it.

Good enough for me.

That’s because the gun control demagogues were never about the safety of children or the safety of anybody. Their concern is, and has always been, dissarming America so as to impose Marxist dictatorial domination over the people. What 50% of the population already knew all along.

“Good enough for me.”

I’m not disputing the figure; it’s just that I didn’t know it was that high.

Glad to know that people are protecting themselves, but not that there are that many crimes.

Yeah, I’d bet there is a lot of that.

"Wow, I had no idea it was that many."

These numbers are probably low.

There have been many studies of "defensive gun uses" (DGU).

The first was by a criminologist named Gary Kleck, who was anti-gun/pro gun control. He showed on the order of 6MM per year.

Another anti-gun researcher didn't believe Kleck's number, and got a grant from the Department of Justice to do a more thorough/more accurate study (IIRC his name was Jens Ludwig). His supposedly more accurate numbers showed 20MM such uses per year. The hilarious thing about the Ludwig report is that he spent his entire conclusions section trying to prove HIS OWN DATA was wrong.

At one time the Ludwig report was available on-line from the DOJ. I don't know if it still is, as I found it years ago.
