Trump stuns GOP, Dems with impassioned push for gun control

President Trump stunned Democrats and Republicans alike on Wednesday by pushing for gun-control measures that have long been poison pills for the GOP and pipe dreams for their opponents.

The president, during a televised, hourlong sitdown at the White House with a bipartisan group of lawmakers, appeared to back a bill proposed in 2013 by Democratic Sen. Joe Manchin of West Virginia and Republican Sen. Pat Toomey of Pennsylvania that would expand background checks for weapons purchases.

The bill — written in response to the 2012 massacre at the Sandy Hook school in Newtown, Conn. — failed in the Senate due to intense Republican opposition.

But Trump called it a good starting point and even questioned whether other ideas championed by Democrats, such as an assault-weapons ban and raising the minimum age to buy a gun to 21, could be included in one bill everyone could agree on.

“Fellas, if you can all get together and we can get one great piece of legislation — people want to see something happen. It would be so beautiful to have one bill that everyone could support,” Trump said as California Democratic Sen. Dianne Feinstein sat with a stunned smile on her face.

“I think it’s time that a president stepped up. I’m talking Democrat and Republican presidents, they’ve not stepped up,” Trump said.

Trump also shot down the GOP’s proposed Conceal Carry Reciprocity Act, which would allow people with permits to carry guns across state lines.

How about "stuns and jeopardizes his base".

What happened to the President who spoke at the NRA convention?

It’s time for the NRA to organize a march on Washington.

They need to be heard from us in all the states and in the nation’s capital.

No, I think he’s off the reservation. As far as I’m concerned the only way he gets back on is firing a whole bunch of people and put a lot of people in jail. Short of that I am done with him.

We can’t have a President telling us to take away guns because we suspect insanity. Hell, people think he is insane. So who will set the standard. And if they can take a 2nd Amendment right away they can take it ALL away. No, I can’t abide that but I will hold my nose on that issue for a while if the other stuff is done. Clinton, Obama, Lynch, Comey belong in jail and that BETTER HAPPEN.

I would hope that DJT would not strap on the NRA; that would be a lose-lose.

The obligatory 48-72 hour waiting period applies to DJTs latest NRA comments.

So do I. But I am having trouble seeing any justification, 3-D chess notwithstanding, for the following:

1) Him (apparently) planning to issue an EO to ban bump stocks

2) His comment: ‘Take the guns first, go through due process second.’

3) Him flatly stating up-front, without even trying, that he could “never” get National Reciprocity passed as part of a package of gun-law changes.

His Presidency would be over. If he includes an assault weapons ban, he is done.

He attacked the NRA .
He fed the Left wing media Mob attack on the NRA .
He mocked the Rep using NRA support.

Fox Left Wing Radio News is gleefully reporting this .
Top story .

Trump is siding with the left wing Mob .

Bye Bye Midterms .

That is why people aren’t showing up to vote for the GOP. These crooks are still walking free and the swamp is not getting drained as promised.

I do not believe so especially with the statement that both Republican and Democratic Presidents have done nothing and time to act. He wants to show how BIG he is and leave his mark. Gun control ala Bill Clinton coming.

To be honest, I’ve opposed all gun control but never quite understood why, if we have background checks, we don’t always have background checks.

“Trump is siding with the left wing Mob.”
“Bye Bye Midterms.”

Agree on both issues. It’s not looking good for our future. Once again I say, “I’m glad I’m old.”

Some of the blue states which President Trump carried by a close margin have a large rural population and a lot of hunters. This attitude on President Trump's part will erase that margin.

No matter what position he takes on guns it will never translate to more votes from Democrats. They hate him to the core. Kissing up to Democrats won't help him with the Democrats but will mortally damage him with his base.
