The ownership of Dicks Sporting Goods appears to be attempting to leverage the tragic shooting of school children into a marketing opportunity. The company has been exposed for its doublespeak on its decision to stop selling so-called assault rifles.
Dicks Sporting Goods, Inc. [NYSE: DKS] announced on Wednesday its decision to not only stop selling AR-15 style rifles, but to jump in the middle of the gun control debate. The statement from the company announced it would stop selling assault-style rifles, also referred to as modern sporting rifles, in the wake of the tragic murder of 12 high school students in Parkland, Florida on Valentines Day. However, the statement appears to be more of an attempt to leverage the deaths of the children in a marketing campaign or to protect the companys stock value.

Hmmmm.
Dicks Sporting Goods
I wonder what kind of people shop there.
Never bought anything from that store in 10 years.
And this time they really really mean it.
A gun store advocating banning guns? What could go wrong?
If this is the case (and I do believe it is), it will backfire spectacularly.
I haven’t shopped there since the prior time they stopped selling scary rifles.
What, again?
Dicks sporting goods.
Before it dicks you.
CC
I beat you to it. The last time I bought something from these clowns was right after 9/11. It was an American flag. And the clerks at the store were assholes. So I boycotted them.
Wont buy from them again.
A lot of people like it or not will accept that a company has the right to choose who they affiliate with. This kind of thing is unforgivable and this news will hurt Dick’s big time.
Let’s see:
At the time of the Sandy Hook shooting Dick’s tock was $51 a share.
After the shooting, their stock fell to a low of $45.22 a share before “slowing moving upward again”
Then, at the time of the Las Vega shooting, their stock was $27 a share.
Unless their stock split sometime between the Sandy hook shooting and Las Vegas shooting, I’d say they have an unusual definition of “low”, and also for “slowly moving upward”...
As someone said earlier, they should change their name to Dickless Sporting Goods.
Well, the had better stock up on Berkinstocks, potpourri and patchouli-scented soaps, because they’re going to lose a good chunk of their American clientele.
Shooting was February 14. It’s been two full weeks. Had they announced this on February 15, it might mean something, but it’s clearly a calculated decision they looked over and discussed and made sure wouldn’t hurt their bottom-line too much. Not exactly the picture of bravery, especially when it’s so half-assed that they’re still selling guns and ammunition in general.
Businesses can decide what stock to carry. I’d much rather have businesses making the decision to not sell articles than laws forbidding the selling of items.
I don’t see any problem here.
I have been in the local Dick’s about 4-5 times a year. Always look at the firearms displayed. I cannot recall seeing AR15-type weapons there. Shotguns, long rifles, but no combat-style rifles (or handguns). Bought my M4-type weapon at Gander Mountain on a Black Friday... made me an offer I could not refuse.
“The company has not responded to inquiries from Breitbart Texas about its policies on selling semi-automatic handguns or other semi-automatic rifles or shotguns that do not look like military-style weapons but do fire at similar rates.”
Also known as symbolism over substance.
DICK’S, aptly named, because that’s exactly what they are!
