LONDON — Police for the English city of Leicester say they are responding to a "major incident" after receiving reports of an explosion.
Leicestershire Police said on Twitter that emergency services were dealing with the incident on Hinckley Road and asked the public to stay away from the area.

Structure explosions turn into gas fed firestorms. Odd that utilities have never installed blowout check valves? Instead they have to close off the main a mile away and then forced inert air purge the remaining fuel from the line, else risk a series of explosions from the gas igniting inside the pipe.
Could be both.... a premature detonation.

I was at a commercial greenhouse complex where the houses were steam heated by an oil fired boiler about 100 yards away. The facility was sold and being dismantled. The oil storage tank was empty. The workers cutting out the fuel supply pipe from the tank cut all day long in sections. Then the built up vapors ignited inside the pipe and blew the 20,000 gal tank off into lower orbit. Killed two.

I guess gas explosions can be different from one another, but I witnessed one once. Instead of the “crack” sound of a high explosive, there was a deep powerful “boom” accompanied by a low pressure pulse, like one of those obnoxious automobile subwoofers. The townhouse just sort of expanded and blew wallboard and bricks fifty feet into the air. Bits of paper and insulation were raining down for a minute or more. There was no flame afterward.
6 in the hospital, 4 who are slightly wounded, two critical. The two were probably in the flat above the shop. The structure was a shop with apt above and the entire thing collapsed.

That’s looks pretty major! Given the location I’d think accident first.
