I remember Sgt York in WWI killed something like 6 Kraut soldiers with his M1911 pistol and attacked 35 MG nests with a bolt-action Enfield. These were trained, combat experienced German soldiers - not a snot-nosed retard.
A man, not a coward, doesn’t hesitate for fear of his own life when children are being slaughtered right before his eyes. You have a pistol with at least 8 rounds, likely twice that. You close with the enemy and you kill him or die trying.

We expect the deputy to fight, using the tools of his trade that are on his duty belt, because that is the job he took, and that is the job he is paid to accomplish. If he is/was unwilling to go toward the sound of gunfire and engage the shooter or shooters, then he needs to change careers. As a direct result of his incompetence, students and teachers died and others were wounded. The same can be said of the next three Broward County deputies who responded. And the sheriff should find a new career. When your department leadership is deep in the democrat tank, these are the results we get. The role of the deputy is to serve and protect, not hide and cower.
Well, aren't you the expert? You ever faced fire? I have - and I can guarantee you that I would have gone in with whatever I had on me to try to save lives.
1. Since you're an expert, then you know that a pistol at close quarters can be aimed faster than a rifle. I doesn't make any difference how powerful a rifle is, if you get a killing shot in first. School rooms aren't really that big, are they? A 9mm may be only effective at 10 yards for you but the rest of us can effectively engage the enemy further than that.
2. Cover and concealment, baby. You move in bounds and when entering a room, stick the pistol and one eye only around the edge and enter at a height the shooter won't be expecting. The bottom line was the this gutless oaf was being paid to protect those kids and every second he wasted outside, more young lives were lost.
3. Ever notice that cops stopped risking their lives for "civilians"? Look at how the cops didn't do at Columbine - like save anyone or risk themselves at all. Frikken overweight black uniformed meter maids with machineguns.
Take it from a combat veteran Marine, we deserve better than that or fire them all.

I think the lack of him having any type of 'fight; in him at all is the crux of the problem. No one knows how they will react 'under fire', this deputy never even got closer than earshot of gunfire, hardly under fire. That was only the poor kids in the building under the shooters sights,
I will respond to you first, Actually, York attacked the machine gun position, dispatching several German soldiers with his rifle. By the time six Germans charged him with bayonets he was out of rifle ammunition, so he drew his pistol and shot them all. The German officer responsible for the machine gun position had emptied his pistol while firing at York, but failed to hit him. This officer then offered to surrender, and York accepted. York and his men marched back to their unit’s command post with more than 130 prisoners. He was backed by 6 other soldiers however, they lost 6 in the Argonne forest. The average age of the German soldiers was 15 years old. Of the 130 soldiers he captured, only 6 officers were over 20...they were all snot nosed kids forced into German service...
The officer followed his orders, and was in communications with his superiors. You must not know the interior of a school corridor. It is hallways and lockers, no where to take cover except for stairwells or doorways. Otherwise..open ground.

I am not happy about it, but yes, I have faced fire, and I have fired back. Expert? No, experienced? Yes, Trained? Yes, a regular shooter? yes. Am I a gung-ho run into certain death John Wayne type? No. I picked up lots of bodies of the idiots who wasted their lives thinking they were bullet proof. I was taught to think, analyze situations, look for weaknesses, act with intent, and expect the unexpected, and it save my life, and cost others theirs.
What I do know, is that you were not there, neither was I, as more information comes out, we will have a clearer picture of what happened.
1. The operative word there is close quarters, he was never in a close quarters environment. School rooms are huge, you have not visited one lately, evidently.
2.You cannot enter an area, let alone a room when you don’t know where the shooter is, in this case he went to 3 different floors, and even went back to previous rooms on each floor, so your example in not relevant to this case as we currently understand it.
3. Evidently you don’t care for policemen. Those I know and have known are wonderful, selfless people.

The problem I have is that when they are the only people available to take on an armed killer and young people's lives are being lost while they wait and they don't act, they are derelict in their duties at best.
They are the ones that are paid to train with firearms, they are the ones with authority under law, and they are the ones who should be on the point of contact when killing begins - even if they know they be killed in the process.
Police doctrine was moved away from courageous defense of the public to waiting the threat out and cleaning up the mess afterward.
I can pretty well guarantee that I have seen more good men killed while fighting for our country and I was shot dragging a wounded Marine to safety through heavy fire. Were our lives worth less? If we were willing to suffer and maybe die for our citizens and our country - for a lot less pay - why have the police less responsibility and risk than we had?
The videos at Columbine made me sick: all those police standing around doing nothing while the murders were underway and scared kids hiding throughout the building. Should have fired every single one of them.
I am a lot older now but like you, I practice combat shooting a lot. If our school needs someone like me to stop a killer I will not hesitate.
