They’re selling French fries.
>>”The State of the Humanities 2018: Graduates in the Workforce and Beyond.” What exactly is beyond the workforce other than unemployment and retirement?<<
Permanent democrat.
But most l.a. majors were there already.
What do you call a Liberal Arts Major with a 4.0 GPA?
“Waiter.”
Put a dollar in one’s G-string just last nite
Then she went across the stage for another dollar. Seemed to be working it
History degree here.
I make a very nice living, thank you.
A lot of them are probably loser bloggers.
You know, being a loser, writing a blog.
The useful ones work cash registers, coffee makers, deep fat fryers, and the pole. The rest spread anti-American propaganda to school children.
Philosophy major here. Owned 2 bike shops in the 80’s, brief stint as a Prison Warden, 25 years doing circuit board design and radiation effects, now semi-retired running a shooting range. I knew from the start trying to get a job in my major was a recipe for disaster.
you don’t study “liberal arts” or “humanities” to acquire useful technical SALEABLE job skills....
there are some fascinating, beautiful things in the arts and they can add greatly to a person’s cultural and intellectual life....... but taxi driving jobs are being replaced by Uber
I know now as an adult that I would only go into liberal arts if I were a recipient of “family money” and never had to worry about what my salary was. But perversely, those would also be the people who have internships and job offers fall into their laps.
There was a letter to the editor (remember those?) from a graduate of North Texas State University with a bachelor’s degree in history who was furious that the only thing of any use coming out of four years of hard work was that he learned how to type.
In junior high school (remember those?) I never got the hang of geometry and was consigned to the math-averse courses of business administration instead.
In later years, I excelled in algebra and, to my knowledge, had zero use for geometry in my life. But the business courses led me to pursue business and accounting, which became an integral part of my career.
Yay for the sweat-hogs.
Soros’ rent-a-mob doesn’t count?
ML/NJ
My daughter got both undergraduate and graduate degrees in liberal arts. She has a strong math and analytical background. Also very creative. Doing very well financially at the Director level in only 8 years. Gets to travel to lots of great locales all over the world - just got back from a conference in Ecuador and took a few days to tour Colombia with her old roommate. I was skeptical in the beginning, but she has really proven herself.
You see lots of high-level execs and CEOs with liberal arts and humanities degrees. It doesn’t stop the ambitious.
They are excellent at impressing McDonald’s hiring department
The graduate with a Science degree asks, “Why does it work?”
The graduate with an Engineering degree asks, “How does it work?
The graduate with an Accounting degree asks, “How much will it cost?”
The graduate with a Liberal Arts degree asks, “Do you want fries with
that?”
I think some, mostly Snowflakes, underestimate what they can produce of value and what impact it will have on society and the existing economy.
They need to ask themselves: Does the (village. tribe, or whatever) economy need more Philosophers/Thinkers (you know, the ones that live in a theoretical world who tell us how we should live our lives), big Indian Chiefs (the ones that manage the resources of labor and capital in our economy), or little Indians (grunts, the ones that do the heavy lifting)? It just may depend on the laws of supply and demand and what you produce of value that positions you in one of those categories. Get to know them, Knowledge is your friend.
Snowflakes and other victims of poor or limited resources (powerless, no brains, no money, no morals, no experience, no luck, etc.) need to question if they are really God’s (or whatever/whoever they worship) gift to mankind. Having done so, they need evaluate themselves, define a plan, and set a goal(s) and attempt to achieve them. They need to understand that the world is a jungle out there. That they are more likely to fail than succeed. They must plan for failure, but they must learn to endure and overcome the obstacles. Waiting for the government to give it to them is not a good plan the long run. Neither is living off their good looks.
They need to learn, in a Capitalistic society, their occupation and compensation will be determined by their production and its value/worth to the economy. For most of us, that means achieving and maintaining a standard of living which makes us happy. One based on our labors and the control we exert over our lives. A little less talking and a lot more watching and listening will allow them to gather truth (facts) and make better informed decisions for themselves. No two Snowflakes are alike and they aren’t equals. In nature or in life.
All this to say, if the STEM occupations are paying big bucks and offering benefits there must be a demand (shortage) for these jobs in these areas. Likewise, if the guys at Mickey D’s have degrees and are treading water until they find a real job, there might be a reason. Snowflakes, look into it and learn from the successes and mistakes of others.
DISCLAIMER: No Indians were spooked or mentally abused in my attempt to enlighten the audience. Disregard the the terminology, I am not a racist or hater of any kind. Mama told me to be nice to everybody. Your opinions may differ.
Did a women’s studies major write that?
