The clearest way to get a picture of how well Democrats are doing in 2018 is to go down the list of recent special state legislative elections:
* A Florida state legislative district that Donald Trump won by five points, according to data from liberal political blog Daily Kos, is now in the hands of Democrats, who won it by eight points this month.
* In January, Democrats flipped a Wisconsin state legislative district that Trump won by 20 points.
* A few weeks later, Democrats flipped a Missouri state legislative district that Trump won by nearly 30 points, for a swing of 31 points in one district in a little more than a year.
* And Tuesday night brought, perhaps, the most impressive win of all for Democrats: A Kentucky state legislative district that Trump won by nearly 50 points in November voted for a Democrat over a Republican, an extraordinary 86-point swing. Democrat Linda Belcher won back her old seat after her opponent committed suicide days after being accused of sexually assaulting a 17-year-old girl at the church he ran.
His wife announced a day after his death that she would run for his seat, but she failed to show up to candidate forums and is tied to some of the legal controversies in which her late husband was enmeshed.
The fact that a Democrat won a conservative Kentucky seat isn't necessarily a surprise. It comes amid a bona fide trend of Democrats winning state legislative elections deep in Republican territory this election cycle.

Stupid people vote stupid party and end up like Chicago, Detroit, Philadelphia, New York, Baltimore, etc. It’s a sickness. The reality is that 75% or greater of the counties in this country are red.
I addressed only the 80% shift in KY.
A shift that big would in itself mean nothing. Anything that volatile could shift back.
Then add to it the explanation, and to include it as representative is ludicrous.
Other races, as you mention, are a lot more significant.
I think it’s a no-lose situation.
If Ryan and McConnell can’t hold congress, that is our chance to get rid of them from the leadership.
Yep, and then his widow tried to take his place and she was outed as a fraud, too.
This has nothing to do with the national political situation. Besides, it’s a state legislature race. It also is in between Ft Knox and Louisville.
If they find a decent candidate for November, this will change.
Thank you McTurdle and the Never Trumper Crew.
State Legislative seats do not indicate a Dem wave for mid-terms. NONE.
Well, time to go embarass her again...
"The lawmaker Johnson ousted, Linda Belcher, 67, was a retired educator who campaigned as a moderate Democrat with the endorsement of the National Rifle Association and a history of working closely with Republicans in Frankfort, including Gov. Matt Bevin."--LexH-L, John Cheeves, Nov. 18, 2016
That Kentucky seat was not a major win. Correct me if I’m wrong, but I thought that woman held her seat for multiple elections, lost it in the election of Trump, and squeaked back in when only 25% of the voters showed up. I am concerned about midterms and losing seats. I’ve posted multiple articles on here regarding these special election losses as warnings for 2018 midterms.
Rs had better fight back
Can’t help but wonder if it is swamp draining. Conservatives may be voting Democrat against swamp dwellers. Better to replace a powerful long-term official with a weak, newbie Dem who will do less damage. Then next election, it will be easier to replace them with a true conservative.
Ok sure thing. Lets see what happens in nov
Yup.
Think it's hard for Trump to get stuff done now?
The Conservatives,
(R)'s,
and like minded "independents"
had better turn out in force this fall for those that will back Trump (regardless if they are "100%" conservative), or we'll be looking squarely at a San Fran Nan Impeached President Trump who will be further handcuffed in trying to turn this country back from the abyss.
Can also kiss goodbye to any further investigations of the (D) corruption & treason.
What is the game plan for moral people when the majority are no longer moral? We are on the cusp of that reality.
I think they have had some success b/c these are single elections so they can focus all their energy and resources on them. Faced with a nationwide election of all House members and a large number of D senators, it will be much more difficult. Look at what they put into GA 6 with that silly kid who didn’t even live in the district? They poured millions into that campaign and still lost.
We will be turning out in 2018 in mass.
Terrible candidate. How much you want to bet we retake the seat in 2020?
Dems win the House and we get Pelosi again.
Guess they forgot about LA,MN (2), and OK. Rhey are 2-4 in the last week.
I went through the Kentucky results to see how we did - maintained the supermajorities in both legislative chambers - and this Dem candidate that won this special election lost by nearly 20 points - a landslide. I remembered this race being made a big deal of by the national media as indicative of something - it was not. Voters in this special election just wanted the drama to be over and the Dem was the only means to do so - when the next opportunity came with a better candidate, she was soundly removed.
Is this Barr’s district? I heard he won. Traveled through it a few weeks ago and it was plastered with Barr signs.
