A 2016 report from Amnesty International cited estimates from UNICEF that about 40,000 boys and girls work in mines across the Congo, many of them at cobalt sites.

As with adult miners, the children are exposed to high levels of cobalt and work without gloves or masks, the report said.

Hey Jerry Brown how about these "Dreamers"? Does it fit in you model for an all electric car future for California? Too bad it's produced by slave child labor in Africa.

Too bad you use Amnesty International as your reference source!

Before the politicians made their proclamations about the requirements for electric cars in the future, didn’t their exhaustive research of this new technology inform them of this potential chokepoint?? We should have been ready!! Why did they just move ahead??

Let's deny them this employment, so they can instead starve at home.

It was never about the kids, just the votes.

Gee, just think. All the descendants of slaves in America could be slaving in colbalt mines today if only their ancestors had not been sold to the Muslim slave traders by tribal chiefs hundreds of years ago. What a cruel fate they’ve been dealt, having to suffer in America today.

I see the cobalt is about 36 dollars a lb now. That doesn’t sound too bad in comparison to rhodium a few years back when it was selling for over 10,000 an oz. They are just bitching cause it isn’t as cheap as it used to be.

More significantly EVs have an energy/weight problem... and a vote/subsidy dollar problem.
Both are too low.

Do all lithium battery designs require cobalt?

Even the newer lithium polymer battery designs?

Cobalt is a problem element for nuclear reactors. Used to harden metal used in values the wear products get activated by neutron flux and become radioactive.

More than 90% of cobalt come as byproduct of copper and nickel. Yes, it’s a BYproduct!
There is temporary less cobalt because copper and nickel are now so dirt cheap that few are willing to produce them.
So no, there is no cobalt problem. Never has been and never will be. There is only just another baseless Malthusian scare by the greenies.
But that’s fine, let’s repeat the lies and let them taste their own medicine. I am perfectly ok with anything which derails the electric vehicule taxpayers’-money-sucking gravy train.

BTW, there has been no EV “revolution”. If such meaningless babbling, typical of letists, is to be used, then, it would be much more right to talk about a SUV revolution than an EV revolution.
