Trump budget would cut roads fund that would pay for I-81 in Syracuse, Schumer says

WASHINGTON -- President Donald Trump's $4.4 trillion budget plan would slash funding for interstate highways, jeopardizing New York's plan to transform a stretch of Interstate 81 in Syracuse in the next decade, U.S. Sen. Charles Schumer said Tuesday.

The plan unveiled Monday by the White House would cut the federal Highway Trust Fund by $122 billion over 10 years, drying up the main source of federal aid to the states for road projects and mass transit.

Schumer said such a deep cut would make it more difficult for New York state to compete for federal money to demolish the elevated portion of Interstate 81 and replace it with a new highway, street-level boulevard or tunnel.

Those options range in cost from $1.3 billion to $4.5 billion, according to state studies. Gov. Andrew Cuomo has ordered a study, due early next year, that will recommend one of the options. But it may come too late for significant federal aid, Schumer warned Tuesday.

"With the massive cuts to existing infrastructure programs proposed in the administration's budget, projects like I-81 would be next to impossible to build,' Schumer said.

The federal Highway Trust Fund, paid for primarily by the federal gas tax, spends about $41 billion a year. Trump's proposal would cut the spending by an average of about 25 percent over the course of 10 years, according to an analysis of the budget plan by Schumer's office.

NY is the 3rd top contributer to the Fed (per household.) Odds are good you’re a beneficiary.

False. The Federal highway fund isn’t paid by the general revenue, which is what you’re referring to. It’s paid by Federal tax on gasoline. The remainder of road funds are matched by state, and NY doesn’t contribute any of that to anyone else.

Are you saying other individual states pay far more in fuel tax to offset NY’s revenue contributions? Unlikely.

We in California thank you for your tax dollars. I would bet that We contribute more to the Fed than New York, but I really don't know.

Thing is, states like CA and NY waste their state funds on stupid crap then take Fed dollars for projects they should have spent that money on. There are legitimate government expenditures, yet we both (NY/CA) waste tax dollars on liberal boondoggles. Then ask the rest of America to pay for what they themselves should pay for.

I live near here. They haven’t even decided what the plan is so how in the world would Schumer know the cost? Nobody seems to even agree on what they want to do.

LOL, the ‘odds’ were 2% you’re from CA...

You’re right regarding the Fed dollars returned to each state. And that’s gotta be part of the calculation.

What about all the tax you pay when you buy a gallon of gasoline? Where does that money go?

Recently I read where CA leads the nation in spending on illegals amounting to $23billion a year. NY, Tex, Illinois, and Florida near the top.,

That tells you where the wasted monies are in these states.

From Wiki:

“The construction of the I-81 came with much controversy. After the freeway was completed, many neighborhoods were disrupted by the presence of the freeway. One neighborhood in particular, the 15th Ward in Syracuse was largely replaced by the freeway. This decimated a close-knit African American community.[24] When the displaced community attempted to disperse out into the city, white residents fled, reducing the population of the city by 30% over 60 years, while the population of the county grew 55%.”

First lesson: I-81 is racist.

“The section of I-81 that runs through Syracuse is slowly deteriorating and is due to be reconstructed.[23] The New York State Department of Transportation (NYSDOT) has frequently said that I-81 will need to be changed due to its deteriorating condition.[26] One major reason for the urgency of this effort is the condition of the elevated highway and other bridges located on I-81 between the I-481 interchanges on opposite sides of the city, as well as on I-690 in the vicinity of I-81’s interchange with the highway.[23] In 2001, Syracuse Common Councillor Van Robinson called for the removal of some elevated portions of I-81 that were blocking Upstate Medical University. He stated that the bridge not only presented a problem sectionalizing the Syracuse area, but also it presented a problem for Syracuse University and Upstate Medical University.”

Second lesson: This proposal benefits one private and one state university.

Gee fracking revenue would pay for it and we’d have some clean burning natural gas to sell. How about that, Chuckie?

At least, if Fedzilla got its unconstitutional nose out of the mix, and hand out of the till, the ‘problems’ would be left to the States in which the project(s) reside.

IE: NY roads aren’t the purview of PA, MD, DE, NJ, etc.

We consume 150 billion gallons of gasoline a year at an average nationwide tax rate of 50 cents (fed/state). We should be able to repave the entire interstate system EVERY YEAR with the taxes already collected. WHERE IS ALL THE MONEY GOING CHUCK?
