Why Marvel's Black Panther is no ordinary superhero movie
BBC News ^ | 9th February 2018 | Annabel Rackham

Posted on 02/11/2018 6:10:59 PM PST by Ennis85

The Black Panther first entered the Marvel Cinematic Universe back in 2016 in Captain America: Civil War.

Now he's got his own film, which goes way beyond the usual expectations of fantasy, fight scenes and romance.

Having a plot based around a black superhero with a predominantly black cast is a first for Marvel, but the film builds on this concept in a massive way.

Directed by Creed's Ryan Coogler, it is set in the mythical country of Wakanda: a hidden African kingdom with incredible technological power, due to its reserves of the world's most useful precious metal.

Chadwick Boseman, who plays its king T'Challa and (more importantly) the Black Panther, tells the BBC that getting Wakanda right was the most important thing.

"This is fantasy and we have to create a culture," he says. "It's not necessarily because it's the first time we're seeing a black superhero; I think it's because we have to define what Wakanda is.

"It can't be some generalised version of what the country is or the accent.

"It can't be generalised in why we wear certain clothing or why we have the number of tribes we have - what are those tribes?

"We have a river tribe and a border tribe for example."

This is echoed by his co-star Lupita Nyong'o, who plays Nakia in the film - his love interest and moral compass rolled into one.

The Oscar-winning actress tells the BBC: "We're in Africa and we meet an entirely new nation that the world has never been to, and it delivers on feeling like another part of the world.

"This is a nation that is highly developed, and they are so because they didn't get interrupted by or assaulted by colonialism."

Actually, no. Ethiopia has remained a sovereign entity for many many years. Long before European adventurism and colonization. I think you can go back to the the 100 BC era and include a much larger boundaries than recognized today.

But the rest of Africa aside from the mediterranean coast, they were just subsistence savages who raided other tribes for slaves and then they discovered how lucrative slave trading could be. They destroyed themselves.

What about all those crappy blaxploitation movies from the 1970s? Surely Shaft, Superfly, and Cleopatra Jones qualify as superheroes.

Ask freeper **PIF** all about the gleaming African coastal cities of yore, packed with running household water and sewage systems, and how those cities were sooo far ahead in tech and organization than coastal European cities of the time..!

The Portugese first on-scene were BEGGING to just stay forever, it was so cushy..!

You might say Africa of the time made them all feel like KANGZ..!

He can even point out BOOKS that told him so!

If it turns more African Americans towards education and intact families then I’m all for it. Right now, if you took all the African Americans and put them in a decently sized land area to start their own nation, 1/2 of them would starve while the other 1/2 fought against the others for supremacy.

If you want to see what happens to a people who are not “interrupted or assaulted by colonialism’, look at the lost tribes of the Amazon or the Australian aborigines. these people were left alone for millennia, and in the case of the lost tribes, still living a paleolithic existence, hunting and gathering, with no agriculture . a real Wakanda would probably also be yet another one of these, just with shiny pieces of metal that they have no idea what to do with.

The comic was created by 2 white guys...Whites always seem to do the job....It seems blacks don’t want to do it...The great black doctors, teachers etc on TV...Someone else(usually whites) are the ones putting words in their mouth...

Real life black doctors and nurses create KILLER KING HOSPITAL,TRAGIC JOHNSON,cowardly black firefighter,or black teachers create CRAPPY URBAN SCHOOLS.

With affirmative action securely in place, blacks don’t have to do their best...Just have to have black skin...

I don’t know colonialism could be defended; they’d probably simply be better off if they’d never been colonized to begin with. Anti-colonialism left them with modern weapons to correct ill-drawn boundaries, and too often they used those weapons instead of diplomacy.

According to the presiding narrative, Africa was peaceful, prosperous, and technologically advanced until Whites got involved there.

And the only thing keeping Africa from being peaceful, prosperous, and technologically advanced now is that Whites used to be involved there.

And all Whites everywhere are bad and should be erased and replaced.

I agree. Biggest fake support ever.

Just thinking about going into a large building with a large number of black teenagers that are angry is enough to crush this movie. All it’s going to take is one death in the theater by a feral youth and pull the plug.

I’ll disagree with you. I think it will be a huge success. I won’t go see it for the same reasons you wouldn’t. However, I have lost all faith in things faliling on their merits. Beauty and the Beast remake was an atrocious movie that never should have made a dime. In a just world it should have been the vehicle to deliver the message that Movies like this are DOA.

Black Panther will probably be strong movie In the Marvel Universe and it will unfortunately greenlight more of the same : (

Saw Wonder Woman on TV. Dreck.

Very glad I didn’t pay for movie ticket.

But that Gail Georgia Department of Transportation lady is sure easy on the eyes.

Hahah I know, because colonialization “interrupted” African states development... beahahahahahahhaaha

You can complain about European colonialism all you want, but anyone who thinks European colonization “interrupted” their development is beyond laughable.

Europeans brought hundreds of years of advancement with them and when they left the natives ripped it to shreds and sold it off because they were sadly too ignorant to realize what they had.

You do not become advanced by being isolated. America got advanced math from Germany. Tesla came from Eastern Europe, you need institutions of higher learning, and we have professors and educators from around the world. It isn’t that the people aren’t smart, it is just the governments are corrupt. This does remind me of the black exploitation films of the 70’s etc.
