The game on NBC from Minneapolis pulled in 103.4 million viewers, which is no small potatoes, but that figure is down 7% from the ratings of the previous Super Bowl and the worst since 2009 when the Pittsburgh Steelers-Arizona Cardinals matchup brought in "only" 98.7 million viewers.

I was thinking to myself that this would have a good ending.... Someone told me that the Eagles were one of the few teams that did not kneel during the national anthem. The coach and the MVP are both devout Christians too.
And then I heard these that all but destroyed my illusions:
1) A few Eagles players actually made the black panther fist signal during the national anthem.
2) A few of the players are going to boycott the traditional meet at the White House because of Trump, thus, POLITICIZING the entire thing once again.
WHAT A TURN OFF.
I did too. Only football I watched this season.

Around here, ID Discovery was showing episodes about NFL players who had either murdered someone or been killed - Steve McNair, Sean Taylor and Tommy Kane.

That may have been in high school or college, but the pro game was win at all cost as coaches and players created ways to do it whether legal or not. I can think of coaches or owners from the the early years to the present:
Vince Lombardi said “”Winning isn’t everything, it’s the only thing.”
Al Davis said, “Just win, baby.”
Knute Rockne said, “Show me a gracious loser and I’ll show you a failure.”
Paul Bear Bryant said: “Winning isn’t everything, but it beats anything that comes in second.”
George Steinbrenner said, “Winning is the most important thing in my life, after breathing. Breathing first, winning next.”
Leo Durocher said, “I never did say that you can’t be a nice guy and win. I said that if I was playing third base and my mother rounded third with the winning run, I’d trip her up.”
Mike Krzyzewski said “Imagination has a great deal to do with winning.”
And that last quote is exactly what I’m, saying. Pro football like other sports has never been a game of honor. It was a competition of men that wanted to win anyway they could. And there have been some things done on the field that should have gotten people arrested. It’s just in the old days they took care of it on the field during play. This was why they outlawed the chop block, the crack back and now even in some instances, the blind side block. Linemen can’t shoot at the quarterback’s knees. They put on face masks, but that didn’t stop them from getting fingers into the eyes.
I can remember playing in college, and later officiating, and coaches actually set up blind sides during kickoff returns that could be also a down block that in some cases destroyed knees. Oh well, win at any cost.
Today’s game is a lot less destructive than the early years. These players are bigger, faster, more mobile, and want the money. So until you’ve been on the field as a player, coach, or official for NCAA and higher, you don’t completely understand the violence out there. All it is is a semi-controlled riot. Just so far not with the guns. Maybe a few other household things, just not firearms.

But the morning news showed some highlights of the half time show and I was shaking my head at how bad it seemed. Maybe it's just me, but I can't understand paying money to hear that garbage. I am amazed, or amused that people can really be satisfied with what passes for music or entertainment these days.
Amen to that. As a wag put it some years ago, Americans don't appreciate "music" any more, they just want NOISE with a heavy beat.
Their was a Super Bowl on? Who knew! I watched Audie Murphy and Randolph Scott movies.
I was playing online poker and reading my newsfeeds during those hours. Free Republic was suspiciously VERY QUIET during that time. Hmmmmmm....I wonder why...
I haven’t watched a Super Bowl since Tampa one, since there were no miracles left to see.
Violence on the field is one thing, it’s like war. It’s the violence off the field that bothers me. Drugs, beating wives and girlfriends.
Many years ago coaches, owners and even movie studios controlled their charges. An athlete or movie star is someone kids look up to. They want to know why there are so many problems with youth today it’s because they have so few heros
I have no plan to watch the super bowl, or any NFL game, again in my lifetime.

I watched the superbowl.
I’ve seen high school football games where the kids played more cautious football.
That game was was totally out there and one great game.

I’m not sure they have so few heroes. I think they have so many that are worthless. When you look around at today’s society you see hip hop and rap people that profess in their material about killing or harming. Athletes, like you said, are dangerous and dishonest. Look at professional wrestling. It is nothing but gang violence trying to gain popularity. I don’t think I have to say a thing about politicians. That destroys almost anything you can find to emulate. All are violent and drug ridden to the point of people make money off of them so they protect them. The media hammers religious groups to include the YMCA and the YWCA. But they stress the protection of the Boy’s and Girl’s Clubs because, in my mind, it caters to underprivileged far more and winning them is votes. Players and coaches and area representatives cheat in little league or kids basketball or football. As a youth official for many years I have had some of the most ridiculous things attempted. And they knew better. They had to WIN!
What could be a good possibility for safe and forthright kids opportunities are anything mot being siphoned for money or destroyed by those that don’t want it to work because someone else needs a way to stay in control.
You know of anything that is safe from that? I don’t now.

Not certain what was on at that time,but if it was Gunsmoke re-runs,then I’m pretty sure we watched those. Whatever it was we watched,I do know it didn’t involve football or any of that halftime crap they call a show.
