How climate change is endangering the Winter Olympics

Warmer temperatures and declining snow are making it tougher to host the games.

It’s no surprise for climate researchers that training for the Winter Olympics, and the games themselves, have run into trouble. For sports contests that rely on snow and ice, a warmer global climate is no friend.

The same week in January that Women’s Cup races stalled, the University of Waterloo in Ontario, Canada, released a study concluding that climate change is increasingly threatening the viability of the Winter Olympics, held once every four years.

The updated study, which includes contributions from Canadian, Austrian, and Chinese researchers, concludes that if global greenhouse gas emissions are not dramatically reduced, only eight of the 21 cities that have previously hosted the Winter Olympics will be cold enough to host them by the end of the century.

Even if the goals set by the Paris Agreement in 2015 are achieved, only 12 of the 21 cities would be suitable by the late 21st century. Innsbruck, Oslo, Sarajevo, Squaw Valley, Vancouver, Chamonix, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Grenoble and Sochi – all part of Winter Olympics history – would no longer be on the list.

Protect Our Winters, an advocacy group based in Boulder, Colorado, and founded by snowboarder Jeremy Jones, works to raise awareness about the impact of climate change on winter sports and recreation.

With carbon emissions unchecked, winter temperatures could warm up to 10 degrees Fahrenheit by the end of the century, resulting in decreases in snow cover area and snowfall, and a shorter snow season, the study said. Snow depths could decline in the West by 25 to 100 percent.

I thought that the Winter Olympics were supposed to be racist. So isn’t this good?

And yet the post right before this story is about how temps will be frigid at the Olympic orgy...er games.

The last Winter Games were played in the Soviet San Diego. Miami will not be making a bid for the Winter Games. That’s not because of global warming.

We need to tax ourselves trillions of dollars so the rich can continue with their winter fun. So what if it raises energy prices 2X, 3X or even 5X? The little people can turn their thermostats down so the rich and beautiful can keep skiing! A house at 55 degrees in the winter is the least they can do for the rich.

What the Olympic Committee really needs to do is stop picking locations that don’t get much snow. Vancouver is the balmiest spot in all Canada, and Sochi is downright subtropical. Heck, Vladimir Putin has a vacation home in Sochi. Personally, I am surprised this year’s games aren’t being held in Hilo, Hawaii.

Ya know where Donald Trump oughtta push to get a Winter Olympics? East Tennessee. The Great Smokies. Better climate than Sochi. Much better population base than most Winter Games cities. 6,000 foot runs. Any infrastructure would be put to good use because of the numerous nearby cities (Johnson City-Kingsport-Bristol, Knoxville, Chattanooga, Charlotte, Asheville, Greenville/Upstate). UT or even ETSU would make fine Olympic villages.

OK, there’s that little problem of no history of skiing in the area. So, no, I’m not serious. But it still makes a hell of a lot more sense than Sochi.

IIRC, the last Lake Placid Winter Olympics was a mess with lots of sleet and rain. That was, IIRC, a few years ago. With all the globull warming going on, I’m surprised we still have winter.

You can’t have winter Olympics without a lot of the WHITE stuff? That’s “rasis”.

News report is that 1000 security had to be replaced by troops because of norovirus. North Korean germs from an isolated population will be a threat. Global strains of flu will meet and mingle. A fortune is spent so the global elite's perfect physical specimens can hook up. So many venues built for it have little utilization after the Olympics. Security has to be a nightmare.

Perhaps it's time to say that the Olympics as we know them are obsolete.

The article talks about process, but points to here, with a list of 197 point-counterpoints.

Scanning them, I didn't see some of my hot buttons... like fraudulent and heat-placed temperature stations, switch from whitewash to latex paint, the exposure of fraud in leaked e-mails, and issues related to repeating the Maunder/Dalton/Sporen minima.

But, the main issue with their 197 list (funny how they seem to have to have "97" in it) is that they create their own turf with which to poo-poo their "comprehensive" list of arguments against goebbel climate change.

LAKE PLACID? A FEW YEARS AGO???

The last Lake Placid Games were almost 40 years ago... during the era that Time Magazine was worrying that we had returned to the ice age.

You might be thinking about Sochi, the Soviet San Diego. Or Vancouver, where the average winter low temperature is only 36 degrees cooler than the average mid-July high.
