Trump's Immigration Proposal
January 25, 2018 | Behind the Blue Wall

Posted on 01/25/2018 10:35:24 PM PST by Behind the Blue Wall

Like many of you, illegal immigration was one of the main reasons I voted for Trump. He's the first and only politician at the national level to really stake his claim on the issue, and promise to withstand the pressure that comes with enforcing our nation's immigration laws.

But we would be crazy not to back Trump's proposal. Legalizing 1.8 million over 10 years in return for guaranteed wall funding and an end to chain migration and the visa lottery should be a "no-brainer" for us. Chain migration if I'm not mistaken is over 1 million people every year, and the visa lottery is another 50k a year, who then get to bring in 10-20 relatives each by the end of it. The lack of a wall, who even knows, but it's probably another 500k per year. And it's likely that those 1.8 million having grown up here are more assimilable than 90+% of those coming in illegally or even via chain migration and/or the visa lottery.

I'm not surprised the left is rejecting it, but for me, it's an easy, "hell yeah!"

I mostly agree, if this proposal is rejected, the can is kicked down the road. Some say this proposal also says no more anchor babies, so you’ve got that, largely an end to chain migration, the wall built, no c-ship for 10-12 years. It seems to be a fair package. I think Trump floated it as an opening to negotiations. As said, chain migration brings in the bulk every year, so those against this will see chain migration continue. Thanks a lot for that. I see Ted Cruz is grandstanding, calling this a bad bill. Well, thanks Ted, we won’t see the wall or an end to chain migration which must bring in way more people in the long run.

“Legalizing 1.8 million over 10 years in return for guaranteed wall funding and an end to chain migration and the visa lottery should be a “no-brainer” for us. “

Might seem like a no brainer to you, but many folks here advocate for NO IMMIGRATION AT ALL, legal or illegal, believe it or not.

Praying for God’s will to be done. That walls of protection be erected and that whoever has already immigrated will assimilate and be God-fearing.

I think the Trump proposal was to prove how radical the demonrats are on this issue.

They must have the chain migration and the whole 9-yards. Since they have rejected the most meaningful compromise that Trump could offer.

The FReepers condemning Trump yesterday should realize they have been as fooled as the demonrats

I can live with this IF all 1.8 million have degrees in STEMM fields, jobs in those fields, no criminal background, and aren’t socialists.

As I understand it; it could take 17 years for the end of chain migration to happen. We need it to stop now. The elderly relatives are brought here then get benefits and even Social Security pay they never paid into thus draining our system for the people it was meant for.

I can’t get behind it the way it is being presented. Plus this was supposed to be for 800k DACA youngish adults; not 1.8 million. Those numbers will affect elections in an extremely negative way for us on the right.

If I had my way non of those here illegally, DACA included, would ever be able to vote unless they returned to their homeland, applied from legal entry, then waited like those who are doing it the right and legal way. Say NO to rewarding illegal criminal behavior. Say NO to chain migration and visa lottery’s. Say NO to anchor babies. Say YES to e-verify. This all very basic immigration policy that should already be in place but the left want the votes and the right want cheap labor I guess at the expense of everyday working Americans.

This must stop and that time is NOW. This plan as written is a major loss to Americans. This plan is a major loss for Trump because he will lose his base over it. His last 3 years, if he lasts that long, will be long and lonely.

It’s almost impossible to deal with the leftists open border bunch. I’m cringing over what the final deal might be. I’m not a prophet and don’t know how this will pan out but we’re a lot closer to controlling illegal and legal immigration than I thought two years ago. In a dream world I would rather have no immigration, believe me.

The reason trump proposed this was to cause the Democrats to reveal their true desires by their rejecting it.

They are no where near reasonable, they are utterly insane.

He bluffed them.

A promise to build a wall, is no wall. This is can kicking down the road.

The most important thing is to enforce current law, which Trump is not doing right now.

We know the President is a tough as nails negotiator. He may get the deal he wants, but the courts and Congress can keep moving the goal posts on the border wall. Are we deluding ourselves in thinking the wall will ever be built? If we are, then no deal is preferable.

Legalization and Citizenship are two different things.

Legalize the 1.8 million illegals as guest workers, starting after the wall is complete. But only if there are no more anchor babies or chain migration. And no right to vote. And they are still subject to deportation if they are criminals.

aside displacing jobs from 1.8+million actual united states citizens, how will the 1.8+million illegals pay for these stem degrees?...

They increased the price by adding a 1 and 6 zeros.

Discussion is over until they come back to the original price.

Good points all . . . There is a good article over at Townhall.com about what is “supposedly” being proposed.

We need to be thinking about the “long game (50 years down the road)”. If we can reform (1) the lottery, (2) unchecked chain-migration, (3) focus on skills for who gets in away from family relations and (4) do something with the illegals already here (deport or give some a path to stay - notice I did not necessarily advocate giving a path to citizenship - rather a path for some to stay.

A physical wall is in the cards, but, like anything else in life we must first make a "mental change" to bring about the "physical change". Once the word goes out that you have only one way in via legal channels and you will be sent back if you try and sneak in this will solve much of the problem. The wall just adds the physical presence for the knuckleheads that don't get the memo. President Trump and his team have impressed me by how quickly they have learned to play the game in Washington and I suspect a lot of hair is lying on the floors of Congress!

President Trump has fired the “first shot” lets see if the the enemy fights, runs for the hills or sues for peace.

Just my 2¢
