Homeschooling advocates are concerned about additional regulations after news of abuse from homeschooling parents in California.
The Massachusetts-based Coalition for Responsible Home Education, a nonprofit group that is actively advocating for homeschooling reform, says a lack of oversight for homeschools allows abuse, such at the recent case in Perris, California, to go unchecked and is now calling for increased regulation of homeschools.
Pentecostal Christian couple David Allen Turpin, 57, and his 49-year-old wife, Louise Anna Turpin, were arrested on Jan. 14, after police had to rescue their 13 severely malnourished children from their home in Perris, California. The home was registered as a homeschool.
"The lack of oversight of home schools is what allows people to hide abuse," Kathryn Brightbill, legislative policy analyst for the coalition told The Press-Enterprise. "We believe that the various states should introduce legislation to have annual contact with mandated reporters."
And a statement from the Board of Directors of the HomeSchool Association of California said they anticipate new legislation is on the horizon.
"We know that many homeschooling families are feeling nervous due to the recent abuse case which has been in the news," the directors said. "We do suspect legislation may be forthcoming that might try to regulate private homeschoolers. We do not know what form that proposed legislation will take and it is a complicated endeavor that is likely to take some time. We assure you that HSC will have a hand in fighting or helping to define any bills that are proposed."
In an earlier statement, Debbie Schwarzer, the organization's legal team co-chair dismissed the idea of an annual inspection requirement for homeschooled children.
"I've seen articles that suggest that private homeschoolers should be required to present their children for an annual inspection by teachers and a doctor. It's an outrageous suggestion,

I would move immediately to a friendly State. The Gubmrnt scools abuse plenty of kids.
By the same token, the next case of abuse or neglect in Public School will trigger the exact same thing right?

This so-called ‘Christian’ couple were never subjected to any type of ‘home school’ inspections or regulations by the State of California and they should have been.
Any reputable ‘home schooling’ parent, would be proud to show evidence of competence, dedication, good instruction and well adjusted, happy children. An annual check up should be required - for the sake of ensuring educated offspring in the challenging world they will face as adults.
“a lack of oversight for homeschools allows abuse, such at the recent case in Perris, California, to go unchecked and is now calling for increased regulation of homeschools.”
There is one huge problem with this premise.
It’s a HOME school. So, basically, the kids are getting abused at HOME anyway, whether it’s school time or not. What difference does it make to inspect more?
Ah, so this is the manner by which they can start banning children being raised by parents!
I know how bad the parents were, but one thing is for sure, she did teach her children penmanship which public school don’t do.
“Pentecostal” I doubt it; they probably did not have a church. They couldn’t bring those kids to church without being discovered. It’s most likely just something they said when they asked their religion. I can say I’m Amish but that doesn’t make me one.

What is wrong with you? What you are describing is a Nazi system which demonizes a large population of caring parents to supposedly safeguard the random aberrations which can never ever be safeguarded. Do you advocate the same thing for all public schools for a single instances of their failures? I doubt it.
Public School has an abysmal failure rate. Drop outs, inability to read /write or do Math at anything close to grade level. The Public School system is failing its students all across the country and doesnt even come close to “ ensuring educated offspring in the challenging world they will face as adults.” Where is your venom for that tragedy?

Homeschooling is certainly challenging unless one is already qualified to teach all subjects from elementary to high school.
I have no venom - just observations and suggestions for improving what is clearly broken - our education resources.
Schools and parenting -the combined effort to raise & educate our children in a caring, civilized society.
Attend school board meetings, meet your children’s teachers and be involved. Public or private schools depend on good, dedicated staff and involved parents.
Sorry you guys in California, but if you home school there, YOU MUST LEAVE.
It’s that simple.
“An annual check up should be required - for the sake of ensuring educated offspring in the challenging world they will face as adults.”
Then require the kids brought to a physician every 6 months or at least some party that IS NOT the state. Once the state gets involved, particularly political people who HATE HOME SCHOOLERS (i.e., just about everyone in California government today), home schooling will simply be stamped out - they’ll do just what they did to their auto industry - make it impossible to survive.
No. They shouldn't.
We homeschool our kids, and I would refuse the state entry into my home without a warrant. It is sad and unfortunate this happened, but I liken it to gun controllers grabbing after our guns when someone misuses them. No more power to the state.
Thanks for sharing. I’m a former homeschooling dad of over 25 years and therefore have an informed opinion. I’d like for you to give it some thought. The
This case is highly unusual in one key way. Generally, when
you have loser parents who aren’t raising kids properly, home education isn’t an option they choose. Instead, they dump the kids at the government babysitting facility for seven hours a day.
Every, and I mean every of the hundreds of homeschooling families I know have their kids involved in some activities. That means that others see them and will know if there’s a problem.
To create state or federal oversight regulation because of a single aberrant situation is the height of insanity and overreach. Reeks of police state tactics.
The state has oversight in public schools and fails at nearly every conceivable level. Do you truly want their tentacles in your family? I sure don’t in mine.
[Ah, so this is the manner by which they can start banning children being raised by parents!]
You are showing a lot of insight. I think this can well be true, and, alas, a trend.
