USS Little Rock (LCS-9), the latest Freedom-variant littoral combat ship to join the fleet, is iced in on the St. Lawrence Seaway in Montreal and doesn’t plan to move until the Spring thaw.
“Significant weather conditions prevented the ship from departing Montreal earlier this month and icy conditions continue to i
ntensify,” a Navy spokesperson told USNI News. “The temperatures in Montreal and throughout the transit area have been colder than normal, and included near-record low temperatures, which created significant and historical conditions in the late December, early January timeframe.”
A sustained blast of Arctic air that extended from late December into January caused ice to form faster than normal within in the Seaway, according to the St. Lawrence Seaway Management Corp., the agency established by the Canadian government to manage the Seaway. The Seaway closed for the season on January 11. Typically, the Seaway is open between March and December.

Are we fighting a river war with Canada?? Why in hell is a littoral combat ship in Montreal in the first place? Littoral combat ships are intended for operations close to the coastline — Montreal is pretty far inland.
Canada is also called The Great White North for a reason.
And as I recall, December 20 at the latest was the date that ocean going ships should leave Duluth. The St Mary’s river, Lake Erie, and the Seaway could all freeze over fairly quickly. No ship owner wants his or her ship trapped in Duluth for three or four months and not earning any money.

After the ceremony, Little Rock was to depart Buffalo, transit the Seaway to reach the Atlantic Ocean, and continue to Mayport, Fla. Now Little Rock will remain in Montreal until the ice clears, likely in March.
Makes sense that this was commissioned in Buffalo in the winter. Some years it is no problem but some years ...
“While in port, the crew of Little Rock will continue to focus on training, readiness and certifications,” a Navy spokesperson told USNI News.
Based on recent navy trends the only certifications earned will be in alcohol consumption and in skirt chasing.
Wait, that was my Dad's Army. No telling what certs and medicines the boys will leave Montreal with in this day and age.

The caption on the photo says it was commissioned in Buffalo so it must have sailed through the Welland canal and the locks on the St Lawrence river to get to Montreal.

Personally, I wonder how many will be too fat for their berthing by the time the ship gets free. Poutine, beer and Montreal smoked meat...
I know a guy with an old 180 foot coast guard ice breaker up that way but the Navy made him promise not use it to break ice. I think he could be pursuaded to swing by, ya know, just passing thru.
