And as I recall, December 20 at the latest was the date that ocean going ships should leave Duluth. The St Mary’s river, Lake Erie, and the Seaway could all freeze over fairly quickly. No ship owner wants his or her ship trapped in Duluth for three or four months and not earning any money.

The new USS Little Rock is one of the Navy’s newest warships. It was built in Marinette, Wisconsin and is a Littoral Combat Ship (LCS) that will operate in waters close to the shore. The vessel also has a helicopter pad, a ramp for small boats and can be used by small assault forces.
