ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. — New Mexico has been ranked the eighth worst state in which to retire by the financial website WalletHub.
The site ranked the states using 41 metrics on affordability, quality of life and health care.
New Mexico fared especially poorly on property crime, ranking 50th. It did better on adjusted cost of living, where it ranked 18th; the percentage of population aged 65 and older (19th); and on health care facilities per capita (19th).
The state ranked just ahead of Louisiana and just below Hawaii.

I had family “retire” to Albuquerque. Great Aunt and Uncle. He was working as a rent a cop part time in his 70’s there and managed to get shot! Quite the family scandal at the time. I believe he retired for good after getting blasted.

The Governor at the time (Dave Cargo) was flying back into NM and saw lines of APC’s driving up 25.
I have visited that area many times on line. It's an attractive choice at the right latitude.

I used to live in California. The so-called Mexican food sucked big time.
New Mexico has incredible Mexican food. NOTHING like Tex-Mex, and far above California. New Mexico has it faults as a state, but the Mexican food can’t be beat.

As noted in the article, "the site ranked the states using 41 metrics on affordability, quality of life and health care." You have to get into the weeds, review the metrics and then make a determination which of those are most important and relevant to your situation.

One good thing I know about NM is that your real estate taxes would be about 1/10th of what you’d pay in IL, NY, NJ etc.
And, GOOD, fluffy sopapillas....not those fried flour tortillas kind, that TexMex places try to pass off.
New Mexico was a great (if randomly, locally, quirky ) place.
Until it was taken over by California leftist and contemporary Mexican invaders.

Albuquerque rated #1 for car theft.
New Mexico is a beautiful state, with
mixed cultures. I reside in Roswell,
and while it has it’s share of the
criminal element, it’s not as bad as other
locations. I grew up in TorC at the time
when the town changed its name from Hot Springs.
Still have family there.

You might have a decent job or be able to earn a living independently or have investment income, retirement, etc. I’ve known people who’ve retired to their dream location only to find ‘suitable’ employment scarce.
