The kids are grown and gone. I live in the Northeast. I am looking to move to a small city or town or village. I am healthy, happy and adaptable.
I would prefer a place that has a conservative base. Every location on the lists of best places to move are leftist s***holes.
I am hoping for a place with four seasons, albeit, not as severe as the northeast. Elevations are fine, beauty is important, and so is the need of good, friendly people.
Any ideas?
Buy a nice size sailboat and go sailing.

I spent some time in Kalispell last year. If I could deal with the winters I’d move there in a heart beat.
I agree with a number of posters who like places within 100 miles or so of Chattanooga, TN.
At 74, I would say this, if I were 65 today and retiring I would not stay in Maine.
I would retire to either the junction of OK and AK on or around interstate 40 or the El Paso area of Texas/so NM.
But not Maine. The political and religious corruption of Maine gets more and more difficult every year.
But my hope is still that I will live long enough to see the public school system in Maine destroy itself by bankrupting to many taxpayers. I expect to happen within the next 8 years or so.
Chickensoup, choose carefully now, for as you get into your 70s and beyond it becomes more and more difficult and expensive to move.

There is a great deal of authenticity here - we avoid the downstaters.
We also hated humidity so we traded a week or so of subzero temps for the most wonderful springs and summers, similar to what I remember in the Mediterranean. August can get some humidity.
It's a lot like redneck north here. I slid on the ice last winter and within 5 minutes had three guys in trucks who did not know each other working together to get me pulled out. People look out for each other. You must have 4WD.
No fault auto insurance is pricey. Opening season of deer is so popular that some towns and even schools just shut down.
And you must like the Wreck of the Edmund Fitzgerald. On the anniversary they play the song nonstop and talk about it almost all day on the radio stations.
What my husband laughs about is how they play the national anthem every morning at about the same time on the local radio station, but sometimes it is 5 or 10 minutes late or a bit early. And that's kind of the essence of life here. Just pretty casual and tolerant. Did I mention flags everywhere? Just everywhere.

I’m heading to Saint Simons Island, GA. Third island north of Jacksonville, Fl.
Might consider Eastern Washington, Spokane area or north of there, Eastern Oregon State around Joseph. Also West central Idaho near Coeur D Alene . While the Western parts of these states are Democratic domains, the Eastern portions are conservative.

We moved from Northern Virginia to Jonesboro Arkansas. We retired and decided that nothing was keeping us there. Our kiddos were living in the midwest and California. We went there for jobs. I originally wanted to move back to St. Louis because one of our kids was there and that is where I was born. Hubby, born in Boston, didn’t want to go back there because of the amount of snow they get in the winter.
We researched places in the mid-south area and landed on Jonesboro. It’s a vibrant town, lots of growth, state of the art medical facilities, low cost of living and low taxes. We worked with a great realtor and had a house built. Hubby went on to Jonesboro about a month and a half before i retired (he was already retired). First time I saw Jonesboro and our new home was the day I arrived after I retired.
Certainly the home was the biggest thing we’ve purchased over the internet :-) People are delightful. We got a LOT of house for what we paid for it. We live in a fantastic neighborhood. Down the street from the NE University of Arkansas campus, so lots of young people and young couples. Low crime (mostly meth) and I’d say we made a wonderful decision.
Absolutely. I LOVE SW MO. Excellent medical facilities. Beautiful lakes, rivers and streams and you are so right on cheaper housing and less crime. Best kept secret in America is the Ozarks
I’m currently on the Hudson River just above Albany, and hope to move outta this place, too.
One of my kids moved to Roanoke Virginia, and eventually bought a house in Salem. It’s a surprisingly nice area, the people are lovely and diverse, from all over the country. The younger set tends to be liberal but I think you’ll find that in most places.
Salem/Roanoke has an outstanding Parks System, loads of things to do, beautiful vistas, 4 seasons but not as bad as NE.
Housing is affordable but tends to few options- New built Brick Colonials 200g and over, 1 Story Brick Ranches 100g or so, and trailers or prefab homes on acreage. There are older homes and most of them are beat to $#!+.
The economy is good, the area has the most medical professionals per capita in the country. Hospitals, colleges and schools are the major employers. Plenty of shopping.
I never would have pinned Roanoke to my map of Places to Move To, but that’s where I’m headed ASAP.
From what I've heard from individuals who live there, it's probably 90% conservative with libtards put in their place when they open their mouths...........

Golf, softball, volleyball, pickle ball, tennis, you name it, they have it.............
I spent my childhood on boats in CT and the Sound. Thought about going back to them after this long hiatus.
If I were 20 years younger, definitely.

If you live in Michigan, get a new life is appropriate. It sucks in the winter and we haven’t had had a real summer for ages.

The Villages!! Your kids will want to visit you often since it’s so close to Disney World! VERY conservative also.
