Walmart is suddenly closing several Sam's Club stores across the US.
Closures were reported by local media in Texas, New York, New Jersey, Indiana, Arizona, Alaska, and elsewhere.
In some cases, employees were not informed of the closures prior to showing up to work on Thursday.
Instead, they learned that their store would be closing when they found the store's doors locked and a notice announcing the closure, according to reports.
Walmart and Sam's Club did not immediately respond to a request for comment.
Sam's Club offered an explanation on Twitter, however, saying, "After a thorough review of our existing portfolio, weve decided to close a series of clubs and better align our locations with our strategy. Closing clubs is never easy and were committed to working with impacted members and associates through this transition."

LOL....Did they go around snatching forks out of peoples’ hands
?..............
Handled terribly, and very bad news for the employees adn for teh economy.
It’s called the WARN act. Employees have to be told 90 days out. Been through it. Don’t know how they are getting around it.
They can just fax it in:

As I recall they basically said just get out.
I would imagine they thought the theft risk was too high to give notice.
Wasn’t the Sam CEO the one who claimed she hated white males??
That’s cold!..................
This disrespectful method of laying off employees speaks loudly of the total incompetence of management which led to the layoffs. Those responsible for this behavior should get their walking papers.
” Employees have to be told 90 days out.”

Since when?
.
Several of the local news reports say that some stores will re-open this week to sell off their existing merchandise, and then will close for good when the stuff is gone or by the end of the month.
What would be decent? Keep the store open to avoid trauma? Or let employees in knowing the store is closing so they can take back out anything they like? I don’t understand your post.
Too many illegal employees.
They raided 7/11s across the country yesterday.
Let me see. Keep stores open in areas that under-perfom instead of raising wages in stores that do perform? OK, Seems legit.
Thanks, my memory isn’t as bad as I thought, yay!
And agreed, I have no idea how they are getting around that one.
Not surprising. Several years ago, Sam’s CEO, an African-American female, gave an interview where she PROUDLY proclaimed that she DELIBERATELY discriminates against better qualified white people and instead hires what she herself admitted were less qualified candidates. After reading that, we decided to drop our Sam’s membership, and haven’t missed it at all.
60 days actually, but there are some exceptions.
60 days for federal version of the WARN act.
90 for NY state version.
New York State:
The New York State Worker Adjustment and Retraining Notification (WARN) Act requires businesses to give early warning of closing and layoffs. The law is more strict on the employers compared to the federal WARN Act. It applies to companies with 50 or more employees (unlike 100 for the federal law) where either 25 (50 for the federal law) or more workers are affected, if that number makes up at least 33% of the workers on that site. NY WARN Act requires a 90-day notice from the employer, unlike the federal Act that requires 60 day notice.
She admitted to hiring less qualified candidates if they were black.
Funny thing is, there are laws that say you have to tell employees within a certain timeframe that their job is going away.
