White House, Congress Scramble to Save Iran Nuclear Deal in Face of Opposition

Senior White House officials and congressional leadership are scrambling to save the Iran nuclear deal and convince President Donald Trump to again waive key sanctions on the Islamic Republic despite opposition, according to multiple sources working on the matter who spoke to the Washington Free Beacon.

The White House is facing down a weekend deadline by which it must waive key economic sanctions on Iran in order to preserve the nuclear accord. While Trump has expressed frustration about the need save the deal, senior national security officials are working to convince him that waiving these sanctions is the best course of action.

On the congressional front, Sen. Bob Corker (R., Tenn.) is said to be working with Senate Democrats on new legislation to hold Iran accountable for its ongoing ballistic missile construction and other rogue activities. That bill, sources said, is failing to gain traction among Republicans due to what many described as a range of flaws that mainly serve to lock in the Iranian nuclear deal and prevent Trump from abandoning it.

The latest efforts involve a legislative push that would preserve the nuclear deal not only in the short term, but limit the ability of Trump and future presidents to ever exit the deal.

"It's pretty clear the people around the president are trying to sell him an Iranian Potemkin village of sorts," said one source close to both the White House and congressional negotiations on the matter. "There is no legislation that would fix the deal on the table, only legislation that would lock in the deal and even make it worse on issues like missiles."

the iran nuke deal is, imho, a deal that enables iran to build up its nuclear arsenal to attack and destroy USA

any WashDC person not trying to eliminate this danger should be replaced immediately

This isn’t about US security.

It’s about the obscene profits Big Business is making from their deals with Iran. And the contributions they forward to their bought-and-paid-for legislators.

Money talks.

This is all about major U.S. companies like Boeing trying to salvage the deal so they can sell billions of dollars worth of American-made products to Iran. It’s really that simple.

You beat me to it.

In defense of these members of Congress trying to salvage this deal, it's not just "obscene profits" for these companies. They are looking to export a lot of things from the U.S. to Iran.

How do you "Make America Great Again" by pushing for U.S. manufacturing growth on one hand, while at the same time imposing trade restrictions against a major trading partner on the other?

Specifically its about those business leaders and legislators that tried to make bucks of the Obama deal in contracts, kickbacks, and political donations. Just another corrupt get rich scheme. Glad it is failing.

Particularly overrated Sec of Defense “Tame Dog” Mattis who seems to think he is Secretary of State rather than Defense. Every pronouncement from the guy is as if he is in charge of the politics of foreign policy. He needs to take another look at his job description that requires he execute military plans. If the specific task is too hard for him then he should step aside instead of stepping on the president’s prerogatives in shaping foreign policy.

Any Republican that tries to save the Iran deal should be tarred and feathered.

The whole deal was based upon Iran getting the funds to continue and expand their nuclear program.

Donald Trump said that Iran would be given $150 billion ‘for nothing’ as part of the deal. But in reality, the money already belongs to Iran and the final amount is expected to be closer to $50 billion.

But the real money is the money from the revenue funds from oil and gas sales that foreign banks are holding and couldn’t be released without the US clearance guesstimated, low, at $222 billion of which a lot of that is in the US and the remainder in banks in different countries. The freezing of their assets started during the Carter Administration.

I’m all in on the US manufacturing growth movement (Ford pays my pension and health care).

I’d just prefer we not do business with folks that are plotting to kill us.
