Exclusive: Bannon apologizes (2018)
Axios ^ | Jan 7, 2018 | Mike Allen

Posted on 01/07/2018 9:02:05 AM PST by Eddie01

Battered by the backlash from Michael Wolff's book, Steve Bannon is trying to make amends with the Trump family, providing a statement to Axios that expresses "regret" to President Trump and praises his son, Donald Trump Jr.

"Donald Trump, Jr. is both a patriot and a good man. He has been relentless in his advocacy for his father and the agenda that has helped turn our country around."

"My support is also unwavering for the president and his agenda — as I have shown daily in my national radio broadcasts, on the pages of Breitbart News and in speeches and appearances from Tokyo and Hong Kong to Arizona and Alabama."

"President Trump was the only candidate that could have taken on and defeated the Clinton apparatus. I am the only person to date to conduct a global effort to preach the message of Trump and Trumpism; and remain ready to stand in the breech for this president's efforts to make America great again."

"My comments about the meeting with Russian nationals came from my life experiences as a Naval officer stationed aboard a destroyer whose main mission was to hunt Soviet submarines to my time at the Pentagon during the Reagan years when our focus was the defeat of 'the evil empire' and to making films about Reagan's war against the Soviets and Hillary Clinton's involvement in selling uranium to them."

"My comments were aimed at Paul Manafort, a seasoned campaign professional with experience and knowledge of how the Russians operate. He should have known they are duplicitous, cunning and not our friends. To reiterate, those comments were not aimed at Don Jr."

"Everything I have to say about the ridiculous nature of the Russian 'collusion' investigation I said on my 60 Minutes interview. There was no collusion and the investigation is a witch hunt."

"I regret that my delay in responding to the inaccurate reporting regarding Don Jr has diverted attention from the president's historical accomplishments in the first year of his presidency." The backstory ... In Wolff's book, Bannon is quoted as saying of Mueller's prosecutors: "They’re going to crack Don Junior like an egg on national TV.'"

Be smart: While Bannon's statement may seem like a baby step, he's as stubborn as Trump when it comes to apologizing and admitting he has made a mistake. He views any concession as a sign of humiliating weakness.

What's next: Look for Don Jr. to accept the statement graciously. But Bannon has further to go with President Trump: Axios has learned that POTUS has said that he wants surrogates who appear for him on TV to "bury Steve."

Axios' Jonathan Swan reported last night: Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon. P.S. "Fake book" ... Trump tweets as he leaves Camp David: "I’ve had to put up with the Fake News from the first day I announced that I would be running for President. Now I have to put up with a Fake Book, written by a totally discredited author."

"Ronald Reagan had the same problem and handled it well. So will I!"

Interesting. I learn a ton reading comments on FR.

My view. I support Trump 100%. I support Bannon 100%. Was there a recent argument between the two? Guess I missed it. Both are patriots.

Good statement, but it should have come sooner, especially in regards to the part that clarifies that he was directing his quoted statement towards Paul Manafort and not towards Don Junior.

Bannon’s challenge is maintaining enough of a presence to secure redemption.

"Never heard of it before either."

I'm old, so I was going to blame it on that.

Try to navigate this /\ after this \/.

Bannon let Wolff into the White house to interview staff.

Wolff then wrote Fire and Fury i.e. dossier II to bring down Trump.

Upon learning of Bannon’s book quotes which Bannon did not deny or apologize for.

Trump took to Tweet to destroy Bannon (go find Tweets).

Today Bannon apologized. Too late obviously.

Hope that helps.

Uh oh. Looks like Miller mentioned Bannon after all:

‘”It’s tragic and unfortunate that Steve would make these grotesque comments so out of touch with reality and obviously so vindictive, and the whole White House staff is deeply disappointed in his comments, which were grotesque,” Miller told Tapper before the conversation unraveled.

“. . .And with respect to the Trump Tower meeting that [Bannon’s] talking about [in Wolff’s book], [Bannon] wasn’t even there when any of this went down.’

Trump has been working the phones over the past several days, telling allies they need to choose between him and Bannon.
I've been telling bannon's amen corner that since this crap broke; pick a side.

bannon has actually done us a favor by exposing himself as a disloyal sh*t disturber before we got to the midterms, and he could lose us any MORE senate seats. no one will be listening to this loudmouth any more.

Must have missed the apology part?

I missed it too. What happened to Ivanka being as dumb as a brick and Melania crying when Trump won? Bannon is a POS and I for one, would NEVER trust him again. Stick a fork in him - he's done.

That’s b.s. If Wolff made up and misquoted Bannon, he should have come out immediately and refuted & denied them like so many others did. He didn’t and his lame “apology” isn’t an apology at all.

When you are “forced by conditions” of the moment to have to apologize, just how sincere is that apology??? Normally, those are cover your butt apologies, to get the heat turned down off your nasty butt. I think that is what this one is.

Yes and he needs to see a skin specialist to have those awful bleeding and discoloured lesions removed from his face. It’s painful to look at. It could be fixed in one morning with surgical laser.

Remember, these sound bytes came out before the book did. Everyone was reacting to what the headlines said the reviewers said the book said someone said Bannon said. That's a lot of saids.

Right you are, Falconspeed.

By and large Free Republic is a wonderful source of conservative information, manned by generally intelligent conservatives.

But sometimes I am surprised and dismayed by the large group of Freeper lemmings who read a false headline and leap overboard. Uhhh, there’s no indication that this is a sinking ship.

Also, it irks me at the number of our Freeper colleagues who see this forum as an opportunity to be cute in front of an audience. “Mama. look at me!”

Overall though a good bunch, doing good things.

Now let’s get it together!!

Bannon rescued Breitbart. He is totus porcus behind Trump. He is a patriot. He is our freind.

The quotes were horrible. Miller, on Tapper’s show this morning, called them, “grotesque.” Why wouldn’t Bannon have repudiated them immediately, if he could have? How long did he want the quotes to be circulated, repeated and discussed? They were being attributed to him, and used to question Trump’s fitness to hold office. What benefit was there in allowing that nasty and destructive process to go forward unchallenged? If Bannon were loyal to Trump, wouldn’t he have wanted to undercut Wolff’s credibility ASAP? [That’s assuming he could have challenged Wolff’s claims, which I don’t believe.]

When it comes to PR time is of the essence. The longer damaging information is allowed to stand, the more it is assumed to be true. Bannon certainly owed it to Trump to nip that story in the bud if he could. He compounded his error by dragging his feet. The damage is extensive.

What do you do with someone who can’t be trusted? You disassociate with them. Bannon who?

no, not during the primary. and neither did DJT. you obviously should have listened to us, instead of that puffy weirdo.

furthermore, if any portion of trump's agenda fails in the senate by one vote, it's basically your fault.
