With Sen. John McCain in the twilight of his career, the 2012 GOP presidential nominee sees a coming void in the Trump era.
As he's expressed his desire to join the U.S. Senate, Mitt Romney has privately revealed that a driving purpose of his service would be to emulate a former rival and fellow foiled Republican presidential nominee: Sen. John McCain.
"There's got to be somebody who can stand up to the president," Romney told members of the Utah congressional delegation in recent weeks, according to a person with knowledge of his comments. "Who's going to stand up to Trump?"

He was very McCain-like during the 2012 election.
Stand up to what, Mitt? What Trump policies do you oppose? Stop throwing spit balls like a spoiled brat and be specific.
“Trump should remind America how Romney went to Trump Tower THREE times sucking up and begging to be Trumps Secretary of State.”
I bet the President will - when the time is right.
Bush League Republicans want to complete the GHW Bush Plan for North Mexico (aka USA).
And I’m going to predict that Romney WILL support President Trump’s agenda....all the way.

Kind of early to be drinking or smoking...........
‘Disgusting’ is putting it mildly.
The Bush League Republicans have been preventing US from electing anyone who would side with the citizens and the rule of law for 30 years.
Somehow, we miraculously elected Trump and he threatens to reverse their 30 year plan to flood the country with foreigners to steal it from the citizens.
THAT’S what drives the NeverTrumpers.
The people of the U.S. DO NOT NEED Romney, end of story!
Yeah, I can just see all those mid western PA residents coming out to vote for a RINO like Romney. Delusional.
Keep in mind that Mitt Romney is a former CEO, governor, and presidential candidate. For someone like this to settle for a Senate seat in an obscure, inconsequential state to “stand up to Trump” is really pathetic. It’s about one step higher than taking a job as a janitor in the White House to help fight the GOPe crusade against Trump in Washington.
Why doesn’t the successful Governor of the great state of Massachusetts run for the Senate from Massachusetts? Could it be because the people there know him very well and his leadership skills? I’d rather the Repukes lose the seat than have this guy die in office 40 or so years from now. If it were Massachusetts I’d accept it but not out of Utah...Repukes can retake the seat in 6 years. If Mitt wins no one good will hold it for a very long time.
It’s the DNA in the left that causes that.
How'd that turn out for him?
Yep, and if someone would pin Romney down about what specific Trump policies he opposes, and would “stand up to”, then any appeal he has would begin to erode, even in Utah.
The next McCain? More like the next Gollum.
The right time is NEVER!!
"There's got to be somebody who can stand up to the president," Romney told members of the Utah congressional delegation in recent weeks, according to a person with knowledge of his comments. "Who's going to stand up to Trump?"
Perhaps the same guy who stood up to the Romney's family dog?
Gotta have a spine to stand up at all.
I don’t know what it is about Mormons and Trump. Mitt Romney, Egg McMuffin, Glenn Beck...all vociferously anti-Trump. Trump carried Utah despite McMuffin being on the ballot so many rank-and-file Mormons must have voted for him, but the best-known ones seem to see him as an enemy who must be stopped.
Unfit Mitt
