Trump, Citing Pakistan as a ‘Safe Haven’ for Terrorists, Freezes Aid

WASHINGTON — The Trump administration announced on Thursday that it would suspend nearly all security aid to Pakistan, an across-the-board freeze that is the most tangible sign yet of Washington’s frustration with the country’s refusal to crack down on terrorist networks operating there.

The decision, which could affect as much as $1.3 billion in annual aid, came three days after President Trump complained on Twitter that Pakistan had “given us nothing but lies & deceit” and accused it of providing “safe haven to the terrorists we hunt in Afghanistan.”

The move underlines how swiftly relations with Pakistan have deteriorated since Mr. Trump took office. But it echoes several previous rifts between the countries over Pakistan’s role as a sanctuary for extremist groups — a role that has poisoned Islamabad’s relations with Washington since the terrorist attacks of September 2001.

Administration officials emphasized that the freeze was temporary and could be lifted if Pakistan changed its behavior. The United States is urging the Pakistani government to cut off contact with militants and reassign intelligence agents with links to extremists, among other measures

Plus, it’s a hundred times more expensive.

The “go around” attitude of the duplicitous, treacherous Pakistan Government is ENOUGH reason by itself for the Trumpet to punch their AID ticket! What a breath of fresh air!

Nuke Islamabad and call it a day.

Then nuke it again tomorrow.

Since Islamabad and Rawalpindi are "sister cities," alongside each other, it would make more sense to nuke one on one day and nuke the other the next day. Jus' sayin'

Ripley: I say we take off and nuke the entire site from orbit. It’s the only way to be sure.

Typical “Slimes” tripe......the relationship with Pakistan has deteriorated under President Trump?!?!?

Cutting off funds to a country that does not support the United States is merely rational. obama just looked the other way and kept the money flowing.

At one point in time we had access to Afghanistan via one of the “stan” countries to the north. Don’t know if that door is still open...

If there is one place on Earth that deserves to become radioactive it’s the entirety of Waziristan.

Peshawar is the real life version of the Star Wars bar scene, without the Jazzy music.

“At one point in time we had access to Afghanistan via one of the “stan” countries to the north.”

We still have airbases in Uzbekistan and Kyrgyzstan, and good relations with Tajikistan. The problem with those is the same as Afghanistan - you have to fly everything in before it gets on trucks. Through Pakistan you can go from ship to truck, which is a much bigger pipeline, and much more cost effective.

“To balance out, we should reach out to India.”

That has been building for a while. Bush set up a program to build India’s nuclear power industry (which is essential infrastructure for a strategic nuclear weapons force). Also, Trump (and Ivanka) made exceptional outreach to Indian-Americans during the 2016 campaign.

We want India as a counterweight to China, India wants us as a counterweight to China and Pakistan. India has been drifting away from socialism since the fall of the Soviet Union, and have repaired their relations with Israel, from back in their more radical years in the “Non-aligned movement”. India is a rising military and economic power, whose population and GDP growth rates are on track to challenge China.

I was in Afghanistan in ‘08-’09.

At one point Pakistan closed the border... the PX’s cleared out shortly thereafter.

The military flew in what we HAD to have, but the variety of food diminished.

But we had probably 5 times as many troops there then as we do now.

The Paki’s reopened the border after they upped the fees for crossing the border to $5K per truck.

Oh, we also had a guarded staging area in Paki for vehicles being sent back into country after rebuilding them elsewhere. The Tali attacked, the guards ran off, and about 100 armored vehicles were torched. Mostly HUMMVE’s.

As far as I can remember this was the deal...

Everything revolves around the all might dollar bill. The rats in Paki will wake up soon enough. I really could care less about Pakistan. Routes or no routes.

LOLO..Trump gets results fast! Check this out...

Pakistan web news is now reporting.

Denied US Funds, Pakistan Responds.....Bans contributions to terrorist groups throughout the country.

Islamabad: Days after losing out on financial security assistance from the United States, Pakistan has said that those providing funds to banned groups, including the so-called charities run by Mumbai attack mastermind Hafiz Saeed, will face up to 10 years in prison along with a hefty fine.

The warning was part of a countrywide advertisement in Urdu, which was published ‘in all major local newspapers’ of the country on Saturday.... The advertisement ‘lists 72 groups’...

The government has ‘banned companies and individuals’ from making donations to the JuD, the FIF and other organisations on the UNSC sanctions list.

Trump loves leverage... he’s going ‘straight to the leaders’ of Governments....do or we pull $$$. He warned them all this is how it’s going to be now. So we;ll soon see how many nations will be left who can still be playing in the big boys park.

Looks like Trump knows what he is doing.

I saw an interview with SecDef Mattis, where they asked him if he was concerned about Pakistan closing off our supply line to Afghanistan (like they did before). He said flat out : “No.” Trump and Mattis must know that they have Pakistani leaders by the balls on this.

This is what's playing hard ball in the big boys league....

I listened to his inauguration speech again last night....as well as years of interviews......the man is doing what he's believed needed being done. He is consistent in what he believes is good for this country and that really is his focus. In his inauguration he put both sides of the aisle on notice.....which is why we see his approach is what it is....

...”We are lucky to have him working for us”..

For free...he gives his wages to charity as I think also Jarrad and Ivanka do.

Worth pondering that fact now and then.
