California - A new study has found that smoking marijuana is increasing among pregnant women in California, which leads to health concerns about the unborn child.
The study was published on Dec. 26 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, according to Fox News, and used the medical records of 279,000 women residing in California who were on Kaiser Permanente, a health care service.
Women who agreed to participate were asked to answer a questionnaire when they were about eight weeks pregnant, and take a drug test to see if they tested positive for marijuana use. In the study, researchers found that marijuana consumption among pregnant women in the state has risen from 2009 to 2016 from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent.
Kelly Young-Wolff, the studys lead researcher, and Dr. Nancy Goler, a researcher, said their study shows how marijuana might potentially harm an unborn child.
"Our study is important because it addressed key limitations of prior studies by investigating trends in prenatal marijuana use using data from a large California health care system with gold standard universal screening for prenatal marijuana use," Goler and Young-Wolff told Reuters.
"We were concerned to find that the prevalence of marijuana use in pregnancy is increasing more quickly among younger females, aged 24 and younger, and to see the high prevalence of use in this age group," Young-Wolff said.
Both Young-Wolff and Goler noted marijuana was the most commonly used illegal drug during pregnancy, and could impair fetal growth and neuro-development, Reuters reported.
Marijuana use may be on the rise because recent legalization of its recreational use in some states "has made people think of the drug as less dangerous, even during pregnancy," according to Barbara Yankey, a researcher at Georgia State University.
"Because of the possibility of concurrent use of marijuana and other substances of abuse, the evidence of its direct association with preterm labor, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth is still debatable, though these adverse effects lean more towards an increased likelihood of occurrence," Yankey said.
The more we study cannabis use during pregnancy, the more we are realizing how harmful it can be, Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia said. She was not involved in the study.
California will make recreational marijuana possession legal in 2018.
Makes everything else taste so good too!
Alcohol related deaths are close to 100k.
Where did you get those numbers, and how were they determined?
The CDC lists heart disease, cancer, chronic lower respiratory diseases, accidents, stroke, and Alzheimer's as the top causes of death in the US (over 100k per year).
FDR and LBJ are our forefathers?
No. Our forefathers are the citizens who saw the harms and agitated for the government to make it illegal.
Look at how our society has changed since the 1800s. Our founding fathers no doubt did not see a problem, since society at the time could not afford freeloaders. But with technological advances, it became possible for some people to become addicts who are incapable of performing meaningful work and yet society makes sure they don't die. You can't compare the society of our founders with the society after the industrial revolution started kicking in.
Du Pont and the timber lobbyists went all out to get industrial hemp killed as a viable source. So, they demonized it and associated it with marijuana as well. Nevermind that industrial hemp is to marijuana as non-alcoholic beer is to regular beer.
Industrial hemp has dozens of uses. It can be used as fuel, building materials, cars, (it is stronger than steel), clothing (more durable than denim).
But the globalists don't want people to be free and live comfortable, so hence the ban.
Not to worry. The pot will turn the children into Superkids. Everyone knows that pot is the greatest thing on Earth. /s
I am aware of no historical evidence for any such grass-roots (no pun intended) "agitation." Do you have any such evidence?
“Our forefathers are the citizens who saw the harms and agitated for the government to make it illegal.”
That would be FDR, LBJ and the Progressive movement. They were not our Forefathers.
My reply to your question of “Who denies it?” was in my 2nd sentence: In my view is that they [pro-marijuana users] deny it because it is their favor drug.
Money is the first reason behind the antialcohol fascisti. More convictions = more cash for the govt and the 3rd party provders of the devices people are required to install in their cars, etc. It’s big business
Second is their sick little desired to control everyone and look down their twisted selfrighteous noses at others
I think your numbers are not proveable. Some not most is more likely.
If you have never seen a child with fetal alcohol syndrome then you dont understand the risks
Fetal alcohol syndrome is a terrible thing to inflict upon a child. No reason to drink while pregnant.
If a pregnant woman is smoking MaryJane, or consciously doing anything that might harm the fetus, it is clear she doesn’t give a sheit about the kid.
Look at all of the pro-marijuana propaganda, for example, that promoted by NORML. They have been swamping our national conscience for decades with that propaganda.
I think that the evidence has been lost in time, buried under the very powerful promotional propaganda which has been very actively disseminated for decades. It is not unusual for reasons and causes to get lost in time--that is obvious from any reading of history.
My evidence is purely deductive. The conspiracy theories that have been promoted do not explain anything in a plausible manner. Yeah, I know, some people love conspiracies, the more crazy and unlikely, the better. I'm not one of them. I also know that once a narrative takes hold, it is very difficult to find information that contradicts it, especially in this case where there are few people actively contradicting the pro-marijuana narrative.
I think that we are going to find out, in a very painful way, the real reasons our forefathers did not want legal marijuana. I do not think that the pro-legal MJ conspiracists are going to have such an easy time hiding the deleterious effects of MJ use as the number of people adversely effected grows.
“I think your numbers are not proveable.”
I think those numbers would be suppressed even if otherwise available.
“Some not most is more likely.”
I don’t remember the 1930s, but I have known many people who were adults during the 30s. Most is more likely.
“If you have never seen a child with fetal alcohol syndrome”
What is this, the “even if only one child is saved” argument? I have seen no evidence that social drinking and cigarettes caused mentionable harm to the Greatest Generation.
Once again, our forefathers were the citizens alive at a time when society was able to tolerate freeloaders to an extent never before possible, and saw the effects of drug addiction. They are the ones who wanted these substances to be illegal.
FYI, marijuana laws predated LBJ. And I do not know of any connection or lack of connection with the progressive (i.e. communist) movement; it seems that communists/progressives/whatever have always been pro-mind altering drug use, so your statement makes no sense.
“My evidence is purely deductive.”
It rests upon the assumption that there are good and sufficient reasons for prohibition, but that some conspiracy has hidden them from our view.
I invoke Occam’s razor. Until you produce some real evidence, your argument is groundless.
“Second is their sick little desired to control everyone and look down their twisted, self-righteous noses at others.”
Those people are with us always. Those are the same kinds of people who went after drugs when society took alcohol prohibition away from them.
Thc is very fat soluble and can stay in the body and brain for a long time....it could be that it is still circulating around while child is developing and cause its possible effect without having to change epigenetic activity....plus IF it is in the fertilizing sperm...it would be immediately present in the embryo....certainly studies of sperm concentrations of thc or in newborn umbilical blood would be in order...just dont ecpect that in California...they dont want to know if they are killing themselves while having such a good time AND saving the world with equality AND diversity all at the same time.
“Once again, our forefathers were the citizens alive at a time when society was able to tolerate freeloaders to an extent never before possible, and saw the effects of drug addiction. They are the ones who wanted these substances to be illegal.”
That’s like saying our forefathers are environmentalists who see the dangers of climate change.
“FYI, marijuana laws predated LBJ. And I do not know of any connection or lack of connection with the progressive (i.e. communist) movement; it seems that communists/progressives/whatever have always been pro-mind altering drug use, so your statement makes no sense.”
There was no federal prohibition of MJ until FDR, and his favorite New Deal congressman LBJ got the legislation. Progressives were the driving force behind all kinds of prohibitions in the early 1900s.
