Study Shows High Use Of Marijuana Among Pregnant Women

California - A new study has found that smoking marijuana is increasing among pregnant women in California, which leads to health concerns about the unborn child.

The study was published on Dec. 26 in the Journal of the American Medical Association, according to Fox News, and used the medical records of 279,000 women residing in California who were on Kaiser Permanente, a health care service.

Women who agreed to participate were asked to answer a questionnaire when they were about eight weeks pregnant, and take a drug test to see if they tested positive for marijuana use. In the study, researchers found that marijuana consumption among pregnant women in the state has risen from 2009 to 2016 from 4.2 percent to 7.1 percent.

Kelly Young-Wolff, the study’s lead researcher, and Dr. Nancy Goler, a researcher, said their study shows how marijuana might potentially harm an unborn child.

"Our study is important because it addressed key limitations of prior studies by investigating trends in prenatal marijuana use using data from a large California health care system with gold standard universal screening for prenatal marijuana use," Goler and Young-Wolff told Reuters.

"We were concerned to find that the prevalence of marijuana use in pregnancy is increasing more quickly among younger females, aged 24 and younger, and to see the high prevalence of use in this age group," Young-Wolff said.

Both Young-Wolff and Goler noted marijuana was the “most commonly used illegal drug during pregnancy,” and could “impair fetal growth and neuro-development,” Reuters reported.

Marijuana use may be on the rise because recent legalization of its recreational use in some states "has made people think of the drug as less dangerous, even during pregnancy," according to Barbara Yankey, a researcher at Georgia State University.

"Because of the possibility of concurrent use of marijuana and other substances of abuse, the evidence of its direct association with preterm labor, fetal growth restriction, preterm birth, low birthweight and stillbirth is still debatable, though these adverse effects lean more towards an increased likelihood of occurrence," Yankey said.

“The more we study cannabis use during pregnancy, the more we are realizing how harmful it can be,” Dr. Marcel Bonn-Miller, a researcher at the University of Pennsylvania Perelman School of Medicine in Philadelphia said. She was not involved in the study.

California will make recreational marijuana possession legal in 2018.

...As marijuana is legalized in more states, users will have to make an effort to be sensible. Based on what I’m hearing from CO and CA, this is not actually happening....

Tobacco related deaths are close to 500k per year in the US.

Alcohol related deaths are close to 100k.

MJ has a long, long way to go to catch up. I don't think it ever will.

Anecdotal?

Gosh, just what the collectivist progressive termite factory needs - a generation of even more emasculated/hyperfeminized eunuch poodles piddling all over the carpet.

Article reads....... recent legalization of its recreational use in some states “has made people think of the drug as less dangerous”.....

Well gosh, ya think! ....And oh lets not forget now those who pushed weed before are now pushing harder drugs to compensate that loss of revenue.

I heard a young black gal talking with her friend at a checkout 2 years ago... who said if they legalized weed her friends would just sell the hard drugs.

>>Why should the mothers care?

A woman’s right to do to her body what she wants, right?

Stick a pair of scissors in there, courts defend it up to the last day of pregnancy.

So why shouldn’t she be permitted to drink, smoke, or toke while pregnant free of criminal charge?

FDR and LBJ are our forefathers?

I’m curious what those reasons are, do you know? and our forefathers? Not sure about them but founders did not see a problem with it, it was made illegal in 1937 right after they repealed prohibition...

“These women probably drink while pregnant as well”

The mothers of the Greatest Generation smoked cigarettes and drank alcohol throughout their pregnancies.

Not all, of course, but many, if not most.

There is some real blue-nose hysteria rampaging throughout America today. What started as “don’t drive drunk” has become “don’t drive if you’ve ever had a drink in your life.” Seat belts. Sugar. Red dye #2. Alar. Coffee. Nitrites. Gluten. Headlights that don’t turn off. Panic after panic after panic.

Every erg of panic invested in pot is an erg that should have gone to heroin, cocaine, and hallucinogens.

That reasoning is similar to the Apple computer people who once said that “Apple is immune to viruses/spyware” whereas “Microsoft products are virus/spyware magnets”

Has to do with usage per capita.

Now that Apple products have gone mainstream. . . the resulting wave of viruses and spyware/malware have started to pick up the pace as predicted.

MJ was illegal for a looooong time. Had it been legal over the past 100 years, I’m pretty sure the death rate would be right up their with tobacco and alcohol.

JMO.

I have a leftist daughter and son-in-law (thankfully childless—I wouldn’t want to inflict their ideology on any grandchild) who tout MJ as the cure to all ills and ironically, he works for a major pharmaceutical company in Maryland!!

Marijuana is already a known leading factor in thousands of accidental deaths and injuries. You didn’t hear about it because you didn’t want to know.

Western men, control your women.

Because they are seriously out.of.control.

And if you don't do it, Islam will.

Actually no. Most feel that even a drop of wine is harmful yet the “herb” will do wonders to cure any ailment of mom and baby.

I feel that prenatal alcohol use has been vilified

IMHO.

The founder of MADD left that organization decades ago when she realized it was being used as a neo-prohibitionist movement. She advocated on behalf of distillers and bars afterwards.

And today the CDC is trying to push the BAC standard down to 0.05 and then 0.03. In Sweden it is 0.01.

So weird. It’s like if you legalize something, people do it a lot more.

Add that to the insane health claims like it does you more good than any substance ever discovered and there you go.

Some of these nitwits probably think they are doing their baby good.

Reap what you sow.
