The more we learn about Amtrak derailment the stranger it gets

The National Transportation Safety Board investigating the accident, which killed three people and injured more than 50 others, is still trying to determine the probable cause and prevent such accidents in the future.

It appears that there were two people in the lead locomotive control cab of the train who were both injured and hospitalized: an instructor engineer, and another engineer who was learning the territory and qualifying to operate the train along the route.

They do not have to ward off lawsuits. Maximum settlement is set by law and they have come out and stated that all claims will be paid out.

Already stated that one of those signs was on the route two miles from the crash site.
But you have to be looking for those signs, and you have to do what they say. Two people?

Reminds me of the instructor saying here, you take the controls, I need to close my eyes for a moment.

if you’ve ever been to Japan, but the local trains ...

Was in Tokyo for a few weeks 10 years ago and the highlight of my trip was riding the trains.

Well, I am currently on a planet that is traveling at 66,000 mph. All good.

Now if it suddenly stopped, I am sure I'd lose the grip of my tablet. ;)

“That has already been checked, and they were not using their cellphones at the time.”

I didn’t think they were that dumb, considering they’re not permitted to use their phones like that.

Hopefully they check the burners that were on that train, for then they’ll finally have it figured out.

Not Amtrak locomotives. The Engines, cars, and tracks belong to Washington and Oregon State. Amtrak is a contractor, in this case, paid by those states to operate the line. It my be that the train crew were not Amtrak personnel. Two years ago they were using BNSF crews to operate the train.

It’s a cover up.

When things are “hard to believe”, WHY do you so easily believe them?

Someone famous must have already said this, but if not, I’ll take credit.

Having a gps governor attached to the system could probably be done by most any CS sophomore. But then again, safety is really the drivers job.

My $150 Costco GPS shows me what the current speed limit is. You can’t put one in the cab showing the speed limit along the route? Gotta wait for that multi-billion dollar PTC boondoggle.

The PTC system on that locomotive has GPS. Multiple redundant GPS receivers. The system wasn’t cut in yet. If it was cut in, PTC would have stopped that train as soon as it violated the first speed restriction.

This kind of crap coming from Amtrak is the whole reason for the federal PTC mandate in the first place.

From the tone and frequency of your near identical posts, seems like it’s YOU who is covering up for someone.

Rather than judgement, management, experience, competence, being at fault, I’ll bet it all goes back to one thing and one thing only. Unions.
