Why I’m Still a NeverTrumper
NY Times ^ | 12/29/2017 | Bret Stephens

Posted on 12/31/2017 7:05:38 AM PST by RightGeek

Tax cuts. Deregulation. More for the military; less for the United Nations. The Islamic State crushed in its heartland. Assad hit with cruise missiles. Troops to Afghanistan. Arms for Ukraine. A tougher approach to North Korea. Jerusalem recognized as Israel’s capital. The Iran deal decertified. Title IX kangaroo courts on campus condemned. Yes to Keystone. No to Paris. Wall Street roaring and consumer confidence high.

And, of course, Neil Gorsuch on the Supreme Court. What, for a conservative, is there to dislike about this policy record as the Trump administration rounds out its first year in office?

That’s the question I keep hearing from old friends on the right who voted with misgiving for Donald Trump last year and now find reasons to like him. I admit it gives me pause. I agree with every one of the policy decisions mentioned above. But I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.

How does that make sense? Can I still call myself conservative?

So many comments are disturbing, on many sites!

Even the official Trump and White House twitter feeds are hammered all day long by willing and absolutely historically and economically illiterate and militant anti-American/anti-freedom/anti-God sources.

There is no question many of these responses are robotic responses originating from left-wing oriented entities.

Absolutely, “Bots” do exist, and it is high time we loudly and repeatedly proclaim our knowledge they exist!

Many Americans still do not know or understand how this works.

As proof, I have known people over the past few years who have intentionally typed in incoherent statements and even gibberish in response to left-wing “BOTS”, (although gibberish doesn’t work so much anymore the closer we get smarter programs and to AI), when the “BOTS” could no longer respond!

Programs are getting much smarter however. It is now commonplace for humans to correspond and communicate with smart programs and AI without even knowing it.

Almost every large or prolific social networking and communications company today is totally controlled by religiously militant anti-Christian and anti-America globalists!

As such, the “Bots” will not go away, and we need to make everyone aware!

This is the fatal mistake of conservatives who’ve decided the best way to deal with Trump’s personality — the lying, narcissism, bullying, bigotry, crassness, name calling, ignorance, paranoia, incompetence and pettiness — is to pretend it doesn’t matter.

How can he call himself anything but a schmuck-head if he doesn't examine his own prejudices.

>>Just like Obama insists that he himself is a genuine Christian.<<

Many muslims believe Christ actually existed so that is no doubt the reason he claims the tag.

Fake news from a token fake conservative who wants to be invited to the company’s New Years party and be congratulatory stroked.
He thinks Trump is digusting?
What a Gimp.

I now recall what had me so exercised by a Stephens WSJ column a while back. He stated as “conservative” the conceit that constitutional government was robust! No, the Republic must be husbanded. It is an experiment, and it could fail if we neglect it.

The assumption that nothing can go wrong no matter how the Constitution is abused is pure “liberalism.”

What a joke. It so typifies the mindless, non-thinking left. They are like a whale that is beached...they will be crushed by their own weight. Sadly, the damage they are doing, and will continue to do, is real bad.

This guy,Bret Stephens isn't a liberal. He's a never Trumper, a "true conservative". I've been dealing with them daily on Facebook. Most of the never Trumpers I've dealt with are butt hurt Ted Cruz supporters. They cannot get over his losing to Trump. They're absolutely nuts.

I get it when some conservatives don’t necessarily warm up to Trump’s style of leadership. That said the writer’s train of thought is really ridiculous. He still wishes Hillary were President? This is just stupid.

She (Hillary) is much more crude and hateful than Trump could ever be.

The best line from this thread, right there.

I still wish Hillary Clinton were president.
Puts me in mind of the DirecTV commercial saying that some people prefer cable to DirecTV - just like some people like to spill coffee on themselves, or run into a glass door, or . . .

Anyone with the slightest understanding of the value of our Republic, and the danger to it of electing irresponsible people to high office would reject that position out of hand.

I could very much wish that our presidents always, as the Bible says of deacons, be grave, and the husband of one wife. But the alternative before us was not that. Mr. Trump was the only alternative to a notoriously untrustworthy person who would persecute a Christian sooner than not.

“Can I still call myself conservative?” Could you ever? But go ahead, since your pal David Brooks does. Liberals always destroy the inherent meaning of words and “conservative” should be no exception to the likes of you.
