Over the past week, we've been hearing about how the NFL decided to move their New Year's Eve "Sunday Night Football" game on NBC to the afternoon because "nobody watches TV" on New Year's Eve!
Well that lame excuse, for some reason, has been eating away at me all week. I knew that could not be true because pretty much everybody at home has the TV on during New Year's Eve. Of course the highlight of the evening is watching the ball drop in Times Square at midnight but in the hours before that, the TV is tuned into something.
So I decided to do a little research on the last Sunday Night NFL game carried by NBC on New Year's Eve.
That would be December 31, 2006. A game between the Green Bay Packers and the Chicago Bears.
NBC had killer ratings and they were so proud of how well they did that they put out a press release on January 3, 2007. Part of it is excerpted below:
On Sunday, Dec. 31, the "NBC Sunday Night Football" telecast of the Green Bay Packers versus the Chicago Bears averaged a 4.7/15 in adults 18-49, 13.4 million viewers overall and a 7.9/15 household rating and share from 8:16-11:11 p.m. ET.NBC won Sunday night in the key demographic of adults 18-49 and in total viewers. This was NBC's seventh Sunday win this season in 18-49 and fourth Sunday win in total viewers. At this point last season, NBC had won no Sundays by either measure. For the full, regular 2005-06 season, NBC won no Sundays in 18-49 and won two in total viewers.
Packers-Bears football was up 114 percent in 18-49 versus the 2.2/6 NBC averaged from 8:30-11 p.m. on the same night last year. Versus the comparable night on NBC in 2005, NBC's Sunday nightlong average this week was up 100 percent in 18-49 (4.0/13 vs. 2.0/5) and up 60 percent in total viewers (11.547 million vs. 7.203 million).
Yes, you read that right. For NBC, their Sunday night ratings were up 60% overall and up 100% in the all important 18-49 demographic.
In other words, the New Year's Eve game was a blockbuster success all around. But again, that was during an era where NFL players were not taking a knee during the national anthem and other childish, virtue-signaling protests.
It is to laugh...

The Bears went to the Super Bowl that season, and the Packers had Brett Favre, and it is the longest rivalry in football. No matchups this weekend would come close to matching it for intensity.

Great find!! So NBC and the NFL prove yet again that they are lying frauds. This Sunday night SHOULD have been a great night for NFL football and tv ratings, but they know that the Krappydick kneelers are wrecking the ratings.... they just choose not to admit it.

The fecal matter will hit the fan in 2020 when the Collective Bargaining Agreement will be re-negotiated. All we have to do is keep chipping away, and there will be some chimping out.

I've been boycotting football for years and hate to defend it but this analysis is extremely flawed.
Football in 2006 was going to win and increase ratings of any time slot regardless of where you put it. Hell New Years Eve could have been on a Wednesday night and NBC's ratings for that night would have been similarly up over the typical shows. That still doesn't mean Wednesday night football is a good idea.
What's needed is a comparison of Sunday New Years Eve games at night vs Sunday New Years Eve games in t1he afternoon to really see if they are FOS or not.
Well that's the entire point of the post. In 2006, we did not have players kneeling during the anthem and protesting against their country and president. So wherever the NFL put football, the ratings would increase.
Not this year. The NFL ratings have tanked and so they pulled the game off prime time on Sunday Night so as not to embarrass themselves. A Three Stooges marathon would have gotten better ratings.
Let’s see, if I was still watching football, and still drinking, and unable to get a date because I like booze too much so was stuck at home (or just smart enough to stay off the roads on the drunkest night of the year - barring maybe St, Paddy’s Day) and had a choice between it and the idiots acting all excited because the calendar will be changing from 2017 to 2018 in a few hours, which would I watch???? That’s a tough one.
Watch The Twilight Zone marathon on the Sci-Fi channel.

Of course, “TZ” almost seems like a paradise compared to the real “Twilight Zone” we’re living in today. :-\
The NFL has thousands of sports “commentators”, “reporters”, and “analysts” who depend on them for their daily bread.
That is why they lie about how the boycott is crushing the league!

2018 is the year our siege starves out the derelicts in the NFL castle.
For 2007 SNF ratings those aren’t actually that great.
