Tens of thousands of veterans have expressed interest in obtaining a new national Veterans Identification Card, intended as convenient proof of their service when they seek military discounts offered by retail and restaurant chains.
The high level of interest apparently was too much for the online application site operated by the Department of Veterans Affairs at vets.gov and temporarily knocked it offline not long after it was rolled out at the end of November.
Veterans Affairs has made improvements and is monitoring the system regularly to ensure all veterans can access the application, press secretary Curt Cashour said. The department was processing more than 5,500 completed applications and planned to release a digital version of the free ID card and an app for applying for the card on mobile devices, he said.

Both Lowes and Home Depot give a military discount. You just show them your VA card or a dd214 etc. Lowes you can apply on line and get a special card also online purchases are discounted. Not so yet at Home Depot just in store purchases.

Stories I’ve heard from my folks about the VFW aren’t very nice.

When my dad and uncle came back from service in "The Nam" as they called it, the VFW didn't want anything to do with them; that's why the Vietnam Veterans of America was formed. The VFW veterans (God Bless their service) are slowly passing away and they need more vets to keep it going. I'm sure the Iraq vets and the Afghan vets have no trouble joining, if they are.

When I renewed my state of Maryland driver’s license this summer, they asked if I was a veteran, because Maryland has begun to show veteran status on one’s drivers license. I showed them my retired ID card and they checked the block. They also said that a DD214 is valid proof of veteran status (snide comment suppressed).

Some did, some didn’t. I think most were just tired of it all and wanted to be left alone, not joining any group.

Culver’s gives a 25% discount, year round. Tell them you’re a vet before ordering, no Id required.

VFW.
Had no interest in VNVA, got the feeling at the time it was a John F'n Kerry type outfit.

I applied for one. After a couple of months, I got an email that I needed to fax a copy of my DD-214 and my driver’s license. I did. Another month goes by, and they tell me i have to provide an electronic signature. I said the hell with it.

Thanks for the ping. I carry my retired ID card, so that’s probably all I need.
