Actor and U.S. veterans’ advocate Gary Sinise is visiting American service members in Afghanistan and Iraq this week ahead of the Christmas holiday.

The 62-year-old Criminal Minds star and founder of the Gary Sinise Foundation posted photos from his trip to Afghanistan this week, where he joined troops and medical staff at Bagram Air Base and posed for pictures with soldiers at the Forward Operating Base Fenty in Jalalabad.

Yes. I especially liked the little epilogue about Eddie.

Remember when Eddie (in the first chapter) looked into the empty trunk of the Great Oak Tree and felt betrayed?

At the end, he did the same thing with the engine of the dead train.

AND...you will be happy to know I read the whole speech without skimming!

But then again, my FAVORITE book is Moby Dick, so I am used to long treatises interrupting the action for no good reason, LOL!

Thank you. I get all kinds of numbers confused.

Another one:

"In the valley of the Chehalis dwelled the Lloyd, who did baptize his disciples in locomotive oil in the name of the Great Northern Railway's Holy Goat."

Referring to the legislature:

"In the legislature dwelled two tribes forever in conflict.

"The Democrats did march behind a great blue banner on which was emblazoned, 'It's for the children, Stupid!' The Democrats did favor that the people live in simplicity like the beasts of the field, but they should not hunt the beasts of the field lest they use the sticks from which issue fire and smoke.

"The Republicans did march behind a great red banner on which was emblazoned, 'Let the market decide.' The Republicans did obsess mightily about the sexual behavior of -- other people."

I needled both parties equally.

That’s what makes us different than liberals.

We are able to laugh at ourselves.

State Rep. Ruth Fisher of Tacoma, now deceased, was one of the champions of the state rail program. When the state Department of Transportation ignored her wishes, she took immediate action.

"Thus did Ruth the Fisherwoman of the City That Smelt of Brimstone smite the Department of Transportation with a rod of iron and smash it like a potter's vessel. Then she got angry."

Concerning how Christine Gregoire stole the 2004 gubernatorial election from Dino Rossi.

"And Queen Christine was so popular that she achieved her office with the votes of both the living and the dead."

A Democratic county committeeman laughed so hard that he fell out of his chair and twitched on the floor like a cockroach.

Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death,
I seeth that my vote hath gone from the right to the left.

From a Green Beret I met in the army 45 years ago:

"Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil -- because I'm the meanest SOB in the valley."

Howdy, Kathy! (((hugs)))

It was a very nice day. I made biscuits for breakfast and hubby grilled a huge thick rib-eye with asparagus and sweet taters for dinner. It warmed up a bit, but not much. The sun was shining, so that helped make it feel warmer.

I read that you had company and that’s great! I know you enjoyed seeing them so much!

My niece and her significant other, Grant...it was terrific. They were busy days, but we got to chat for a half hour or so each night before bed. It was good. d:o)

A very pleasant good Tuesday morning and ((HUGS)) to everyone at the Canteen and to all our military at home and abroad. Thanks for your service to our country and thanks so much Lauren for this morning's thread.

How's everyone doing this morning?

Good evening, radu...did you have a great time at the party? Get plenty to eat?

Stay warm!! It’s 16 here and not going to get out of the teens all week, and nights single digits.

Howdy, Kathy!

Yes, it was a good time at the party tonight. A couple was in town from MI that we hadn’t seen in a couple of years and that was a treat.

Trying to stay warm but it won’t be easy this week. Not as cold as it is up there but plenty cold. 30s for highs and low to mid 20s for lows. At least we don’t have snow though there’s a little across the state showing on the radar.

Did you have a good day? It’s a shame Ash and Grant had to leave yesterday, but you did get to see them for several days.

I enjoyed having them here. A bit of visiting each night was just right for us this trip.

That is really cold for you...stay warm.

I am off to bed...work tomorrow.

Rest well when you get there.
