Trump first president to protect electric grid from EMP, cyberattacks
Washington Examiner ^ | Dec 20, 2017 | Paul Bedard

Posted on 12/21/2017 8:37:37 PM PST by PA Engineer

President Trump became the first national leader to call for protecting the U.S electric and communications grid against an electromagnetic attack like one practiced in North Korea.

Deep in his new national security strategy released this week, he made good on a campaign promise to move quickly to make the fixes that proponents have long called for.

Two of the chief advocates, William R. Graham and Peter Vincent Pry, executives of the nation’s first Congressional EMP Commission, said in a statement, “President Trump understands, even if everyone in his administration does not, that ‘strategic stability’ and ‘longstanding strategic relationships with Russia or China’ are best maintained — not by a policy of mutual vulnerability — but by a policy of ‘Peace Through Strength.’ Protecting the nation from all missile threats and EMP should be the cornerstone of a ‘Peace Through Strength’ policy.”

Yet another prayer answered.

EMP is a very real threat and would be catastrophic beyond imagination. We are so blessed to have President Trump at the helm right now.

I can’t imagin some worthless little twit like Murkowsky is going to be able to derail this President at this time in our history.

I agree. It is important.

Trump gets one thing done, and instead of resting on his laurels, he’s already got numerous other irons in the fire.

He’s a human dynamo, and he’s all ours. LOL

Not only that...but notice that the rate of WINNING is increasing

as is the scope and complexity of the WIN.

Trump’s had a few other things on his plate - defeating ISIS, passing the large tax reform/cut in history... and many other things... I’ll see if I can find you a list.

We can be thankful he’s put EMP protection on his list - because now it will get done.

“but I suspect that we can harden against them without much trouble -”

My understanding is that power companies have lobbied hard against regulations designed to force them into hardening against EMP. The reason is, any dollar spent that does not bring in a dollar-plus is wasted. The fact that no such EMP event has ever happened is taken to mean that no such event could happen. (This is called normalcy bias.) Therefore the money is wasted.

Since there has been no national leadership on EMP, meaning a significant political force, like a senate committee or the President, the lobby groups have been successful in stopping any significant legislation.

If EMP has the President’s ear then I am very happy. Even mother nature could send us back to the stone age with a burp from the sun.

“This is called normalcy bias.”

Tell me about it. It’s like the FBI intercepting a plan to train terrorists to fly airplanes, so they can take over jets and fly them into buildings.

The FBI reaction: “You’ve got to be joking, they would all get killed doing a stunt like that. Will never happen.”

...and so 9-11, brought to you by ‘normalcy bias’.

I wonder if Murkowsky will block this effort like she did the last one?

I suppose if blocking it causes more women to have abortions after SHTF, then she will block it.

Fed regulations say all mfg after Dec 31 must be electronic controls.

Dumb. Eventually, our entire lives will be controlled by robots, then when SHTF, who will change our diapers?

So, all you need is all these giant grounding wires dangling down from the 100kV electrical line pylons, eh?

Yea, pretty much. When the voltage hits a level higher than intended by some margin, maybe 20% higher, then you conduct to ground. The 20% voltage surge for a very short time will not electronics. Basically a giant surge suppressor.

But as noted above, it won’t generate revenue, so the approach of typical business managers is to deal with the issue AFTER it happens. We have an entire NRC simply because nuke operators and designers would do the same if left alone to make safety decisions.

“Agreed. Maybe Puerto Rico and the Atlanta Airport will stimulate peoples imaginations.”

We basically need a “Pearl Harbor” type of event - where the Norks zap an island that isn’t too populated and people, ONCE AND FOR ALL, learn that this crap is real. Unfortunately that probably won’t happen, and instead the Norks will simply go all out to take down this country, now that everything is in place for them.

“Fed regulations say all mfg after Dec 31 must be electronic controls.”

That is such BS (on their part). I’ve told my wife, over and over, that “yes, you can get a nice, shiny, machine”...you just won’t get clothes as clean as our ‘junky’ 20 year unit. And as long as she’s ok with it, and I can still get parts, I’ll simply keep fixing it.

This was one repair: Replacing the ‘dogs’ on our unit.

(p.s., I only linked to Walmart because it came up first - I, obviously, would never shop there)

“Actually Art Bell has left the show...Quite a while ago now. His successor George Noory, however, is completely on bass about this topic.”

No argument there. I just use “Art Bell” as a metaphor to make a point as to why the people who are supposed to keep us safe are hell-bent on keeping us exposed to annihilation from a tin-pot dictator.

40 minutes after I posted last night we lost power for 3 hours. Mid 30’s. About 10 sq mi area blackout. I’m suspecting a drunk driver slid on ice and missed the 100+ ft gap to hit the 20” pole.
