Alaskan snow more than doubles due to global warming: Study

PARIS - Snowfall in central Alaska has more than doubled since the mid 1800s, said a study on Tuesday, pointing a finger at global warming.

Two ice cores drilled into Mount Hunter in the Denali National Park revealed a 117 per cent increase in wintertime snowfall in south-central Alaska since about 1840, researchers wrote in the journal Scientific Reports.

Summer snow also increased, by nearly 50 per cent.

"We were shocked when we first saw how much snowfall has increased," said the study's co-author Erich Osterberg of Dartmouth College.

"We had to check and double-check our results to make sure of the findings." Next, the team set out to find out why.

Scientific models predict that global precipitation - rain or snow - would increase by as much as 2 per cent per deg C of global warming. Warmer air holds more moisture.

This accounted for some, but not most, of the Denali snowfall increase, the team said.

They found another contributor: the strengthening of a low-pressure system called the Aleutian Low in the Bering Sea off the Alaskan coast, driven by warmer tropical oceans.

The Aleutian Low brings a northward flow of warm, moist air to Alaska.

"It is now glaringly clear from our ice core record that modern snowfall rates in Alaska are much higher than natural rates before the Industrial Revolution," study co-author Dominic Winski of Dartmouth College said in a statement.

This is when humankind started pumping planet-warming greenhouse gases into the atmosphere.

The same changes accounted for a decrease in Hawaiian precipitation, the paper pointed out.

And it stressed that the Alaskan impact would not necessarily be repeated in other places with similar conditions.

"Scientists keep discovering that on a regional basis, climate change is full of surprises," said Osterberg.

Maybe the almost total lack of sunspots has something to do with this early evidence of a coming Ice Age.

Or maybe I’m using the wrong light bulbs.

Horsecrap. They hardly got any snow for the past 2 years, and my sister in law lives in Wasilla to witness it. Was that caused by glo-bull warming also???

This insane rationalization is hilarious! They’ll go to any length to find a human marker in random weather cycles.

Two mile thick glaciers covering most of the northern hemisphere were caused by wasteful large scale slash and burn agriculture practiced by Neanderthals and Cro-magnons ... both of whom were white ... and were male dominant!

This is what’s called an “out”.

Funny, I thought they said “children won’t know what snow is!”

Oh, I guess from now on it will only snow in Alaska, all due to Globull Warming.

Funny, a lot of fairly moderate latitudes have had snow so far this winter..... not that seasonal variations really mean anything, but the Climate Alarmists cite every flicker of variation to go all Chicken Little on us....

Yeah, the warmer it is the more it snows. That why I make my ice cubes in the oven.

When I'm asked if I believe in Global Warming/Climate Change, I say "Yeah - in fact, we're still warming up from the last Ice Age and there's not a dang thing we can do about it."

Perhaps that 8 feet they reference was not the norm. From another study regarding the Sierra Nevada climate of 1650-1850 they state:

Climate varies not only spatially but also temporally, with
some periods being relatively wet and others relatively dry,
some relatively cool and others warm. Putting aside for now
the year-to-year and decade-to-decade variations in climate,
it is possible to characterize the period from the mid-1600s to
the mid-1800s as having been, by modern standards, abnormally
cool and moderately dry. This interval was preceded
by several centuries of cool and wet conditions and was followed
by the relatively warm and wet conditions of the past
145 years. Evidence for these generalizations comes from several
sources.

From your list, I found this very interesting as being caused by Gorebull Warming:

.....extinctions (apes, human, civilisation, koalas, lizards, logic, .......

Yep, Gorebull Warming has caused logic to go extinct!

I have whiplash—the last twenty articles said it wasn’t “global warming” but rather was “climate change”.

Now we are back to “global warming” again.

Whiplash, I tell you!

From an article in Scientific America dated Sept. 26, 2017:

Scientists have just documented an unexpected process occurring in the air over the Antarctic ice sheet: The wind is causing snowflakes to vaporize — literally — before they hit the ground.

This means less snow may be accumulating on the continent's surface than scientists thought. And that could change researchers' understanding of the way climate change affects the ice sheet, including their estimates of future sea-level rise.

“If there is warming over Antarctica, which is likely to happen, then the classical view is to say, well, warmer air, you can have more moisture in the air, so we should expect an increase in precipitation,” said Alexis Berne, a researcher at the Swiss Federal Institute of Technology and senior author of the new study, which was published yesterday in Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.

That's because snow that builds up on the ground tends to turn to ice over time, adding more mass to the ice sheet. But now, the researchers believe that future climate change could also produce an increase in the kinds of wind conditions that are causing snowflakes to vaporize — meaning the two effects could cancel each other out.

Amewrican Scientific: Vanishing Antarctic Snowflakes May Alter Sea Level Rise

So...

Less snow = less ice = global warming.

And now, more snow = more ice = global warming.

Eh. Doesn't matter either way. It's all Trump's fault.

The formula is this: It’s global warming if it’s hot, and global warming if it’s not.
