California Gov. Jerry Brown and former Vice President Al Gore lead the list of those blaming climate change for Southern Californias devastating wildfires, calling them the new normal, but others insist the science just isnt there.
That includes climate scientists such as University of Washington meteorologist Cliff Mass, who moved to extinguish the now normal narrative by arguing that the data strongly suggests there is no credible evidence that global warming is fueling this falls California coastal wildfires, and that claims to the contrary are baseless, if not outright wrong.
The bottom line of all this is that observations and the best scientific reasoning do NOT suggest that global warming is enhancing CA coastal wildfires through effects on temperature and precipitation, Mr. Mass said Monday in a post on his weather and climate blog.
He and others have pointed to the heavy precipitation earlier this year in California after five years of drought, which resulted in high vegetation growth that feeds the flames.
The destructive fires in California are not unexpected given the wet winter last year and resultant plant growth, followed by hot and dry weather since then in which the vegetation dried out, University of Colorado Boulder meteorologist Roger A. Pielke Sr. said in an email.
Then there is the human variable. Just as people are responsible for emitting carbon dioxide into the atmosphere, they also are known for setting fires.
An important issue is the extent humans have deliberately or inadvertently started the fires, Mr. Pielke said. If these were not started by people (including sparks from power lines), how many fires would there have been naturally? Probably none.

Oooops he did it again
At what point will Moonbeam be finally accepted as the utter fool that he is?
Breaking News! Enormous quantities of hot air emanating from an unknown source in the California Governor’s Mansion shown to be responsible for dry conditions in the state.
These fires are also dependent on weather conditions that create the situation for fires to start and flourish.
We have periods where high winds whip through Southern California, making whatever natural habitat that exist, very dry. The moisture is pulled out, and the brush is ready to almost explode when a fire starts.
Is this necessarily a heat problem? Not really. A cold dry wind can just as easily contribute to this type of situation.
I am also very suspicious about arson related to these fires.
Firebugs, and reckless humans contribute to these fires. That’s not to say some don’t naturally occur, power lines being blown down, or lightening strikes occurring.
There is a tendency for anything possible being blamed on global warming.
I don’t think this is a confirmation that global warming is wreaking havoc.
Good post jazusamo!
Guarantee you that the 245 days without rain was caused by Geo-engineering (chemtrails - spraying metallic particulates or chemical/biological aerosols). Ever wonder what those chemtrails are doing? Must be very expensive to have those planes dumping tons of stuff into the air. Wonder why those fires are burning hotter and spreading faster (aluminum, magnesium, etc. are accelerators)? If they are up to doing good, why aren’t they on the media extolling their successes? (www.geoengineeringwatch.org)
Very well said!
Not only about the recurring weather conditions but the probability of humans intentionally starting fires.
Years ago arson fires were normally started by nutjob arsonists. Now added to them are the criminal element and the terrorist element that have learned just when they can cause the most havok and destruction.
In my view global warming has little if any effect on on these fires.
Thanks, my FRiend!
Thanks. I appreciate the note.
I should have also mentioned that these types of winds can come up at about any time of the year, if the weather fronts arrange correctly. Winds come out of the North over the mountains and through the canyons.
These winds can reach lower hurricane strength at times, 70-80 mph, and they do cause some regional damage.

It’s not a purely summer effect showing up during the winter.
Folks also need to know we’ve not had winter weather here yet this year. That’s not that strange a thing in Southern California.
On New Years day it’s frequently in the 70s here for the Rose Parade and Bowl.
Most folks know our winters aren’t like winters back East. This year we have been down in the 60s during the days at one point, but we’ve mostly been in the 70s, 80s, and even 90s within the last month or so. This is normal, and always has been.
Nights have drifted down into the 40s a few times, but mostly in the 50s.
Have the citizenry take the massive amounts of dried-out 'vegetation' and burn them in their fireplaces. It will cut down on the wildfires and save the citizenry tons of money and reduce CO2 powerplant emissions. The smoke in the air will help increase the precipitation and further reduce the possibility of wildfires.
It’s funny they never mention how many MILLIONS of acres mankind has SAVED from being burnt via firefighting efforts.
Before man was here, what would stop a fire from burning the entire state from a random lightning strike.
Jerry Brown must still be high from the drugs Linda Ronstadt used to give him.

OK, tell me again how long desert/drought conditions have existed in California?
Climate change is the biggest hoax ever perpetrated on mankind other than uranium one being totally debunked according to Hildabeast.
My question is “what ignited these fires?” In previous wildfires, the news media is all over the place talking about who or what started these fires. . . but now, crickets. They say nothing. I recall that about four years ago the Islamist terrorists said that one of their modalities of attack in the USA was to light lots of wildfires and forrest fires. What are we getting now? Lots of wildfires. . . yet the government is standing mum on the causes. Why?
Brown blames everything on global warming including his bowel movements
How are these fires starting?
Fire ecology I a normal part of forest and plains ecology.
For Californians to be so ignorant believing that their state is immune is par for the course.
And the way Moonbeam said it, it was like, “You made your bed, now LIE IN IT!” I didn’t believe him of course (consider the source) but I hated his moral superiority as he imagined he was reveling in the suffering of conservatives (all “good” liberals believe in climate hoax).
I don’t know the causes and it’s possible the authorities don’t know at this time either.
My personal belief is some may well have been intentionally set by nuts or criminals or terrorists.
It doesn’t take genius with a lot of knowledge or equipment to start them.
