Reps. John Lewis (D-Ga.) announced Thursday he wont attend the opening of the Mississippi Civil Rights Museum on Saturday because President Trump will be there.
President Trumps attendance and his hurtful policies are an insult to the people portrayed in this civil rights museum," Lewis said in a joint statement with Rep. Bennie Thompson (D-Miss.).
Lewis and Thompson cited Trumps past comments about women, immigrants and NFL players who have protested during the national anthem before games, saying his remarks "disrespect the efforts" of civil rights leaders.
Lewis had previously said he was reconsidering whether to attend after the White House announced Tuesday that Trump would be at the event in Jackson, Miss.
We think its unfortunate that these members of Congress wouldnt join the President in honoring the incredible sacrifice civil rights leaders made to right the injustices in our history," White House press secretary Sarah Huckabee Sanders said in a statement.
"The President hopes others will join him in recognizing that the movement was about removing barriers and unifying Americans of all backgrounds.
Lewis has been a frequent critic of Trump and drew the presidents ire in January, before Trump officially took office, after saying he didn't consider him to be a legitimate president."
Trump said on Twitter the congressman should spend more time on fixing and helping his district, which is in horrible shape and falling apart (not to mention crime infested).
Lewis, on Wednesday, was one of 58 House Democrats who voted in favor of beginning impeachment proceedings against Trump. The measure overwhelmingly failed in the GOP-lead House.
Lewis was a key civil rights leader in the 1960s as chairman of the Student Nonviolent Coordinating Committee.
The NAACP, on Tuesday, announced opposition to Trump attending the museum opening, saying he has created a racially hostile climate.

Trump made many trips to the inner city during the campaign. He said many times that the Dims took their vote for granted & only showed up once every 4 years, but he would return more often.
He should start making a full on effort to return to many of the black areas & stick it in the Dims face. Let them act like crybabies if they want.
he will only be missed when the media runs his rant alongside trump wowing the masses in attendance. maybe he will take a picture in front of the musuem with an empty space next to him symbolizing the martyr john lewis...
hehehe. trump is a masterful politician.
Still some wiggle room for him to come up short on the content of his character.
One learns things over time. One thing I learned when Obama was president was just how many black people really don’t like whites....just because they were white. I am 55 and this was new to me.
One of the early lessons of the Trump presidency is how petty the left can be....everything is personal. Rush has always talked about how the left just can relax and have some fun, be gracious and civil when required. Man are these folks jackasses.
Good.
Take Al Sharpton and the rest of the lying race hustlers with you.
Anyone heard from Hillary lately? I haven’t heard from them since Bill ran off to San Juan a few weeks back.
Why is it that ‘civil rights leaders’ are only interested in the ‘rights’ of one ‘race’ ?
“good riddance to bad rubbish” works well for clown lewis.
Oh noes douche bag John Lewis won’t be attending such a pity such a pity
Maybe Lewis can walk around in his undies like dirt bag Conyers
And the air will be a little cleaner.
I almost spun myself off my swivel chair laughing about that!
One less racist at the event!
I heard John Lewis on Atlanta radio on an Election Day frantically urging blacks to get to the polls and vote for the black candidate or whites would win and sic dogs and turn fire hoses on blacks. He is a lying racist son of a bitch. KMAJL!
It will be a memorable and dignified occasion without John Lewis present.
