P22 is the most famous mountain lion in the world, living in Griffith Park, right in the heart of Los Angeles. He was born in the Santa Monica Mountains, and crossed two of the busiest freeways in America, the 405 and the 101, before he settled in the park. Yet P22 is now trapped, hemmed in by freeways and the urban sprawl, with little chance of ever finding a mate. Now a new documentary film will explore his plight and the development of the wildlife crossing at Liberty Canyon in Los Angeles. Angelenos and local conservationists alike are battling to help P22 and the mountain lions of the Santa Monica Mountains, as they try to raise $50 million dollars, while facing resistance from public ignorance and the spread of rodenticides.

Beth Pratt, the California Director for the National Wildlife Federation, is spearheading the “Save LA Cougars” campaign to raise over $55 million to build a wildlife crossing over the 101 freeway at Liberty Canyon, near the place where P22 was born.

“A great story told so beautifully and warmly. For the first time in my life I actually want to visit LA.” – Patrick Barkham, Environment Correspondent, The Guardian.

Sounds like a good film, especially for those who like the outdoors and wildlife. But i question spending $50 MILLION to save one cat in Griffith Park. Why don't they simply relocate the cat to a better area?

It's Los Angeles. By the time everyone is paid off, it'll leave $20 to move the cat.

Give it a Prius.

Here’s how things work in California.

They get $50,000,000 to relocate one mountain lion.

$25,000,000 goes to the Democrat Party to buy votes.

$24,999,999 goes to the Democrat politicians to buy condos in Kauai.

The cat gets a buck for bus fare.

The cat votes Democrat for life.

crossed two of the busiest freeways in America

If he crossed them to get in, he can cross them to get out - if he wants to.

All these humans, presuming to know what's best for all creatures!

Uhmmm, not true. The fifty million is for P22 “and the mountain lions of the Santa Monica Mountains.”

If he’s been tagged in the ear, he should have been sent to the zoo. Otherwise, he’s on his own.

"A year ago I moved to a 5-acre ranch in the Malibu mountains so that my children and I can experience the healing properties of living amidst nature, animals, and the spirit of the Chumash Indians that once inhabited this sacred land. This has been a journey of the heart and, ultimately, towards my soul path.

I have named my new home and business Shakti Ranch because it represents a return to love and devotion to a spiritual path...for me and for others.

My intention is for Shakti Ranch to be a venue for practitioners in the healing arts to hold full or half-day retreats. "

Because that wouldn’t make them feel as good and with liberals, it’s all about feelings, not results.

I’m sure it’s not just about the one cat. The article said it’s about all the cats in the park. But it’s probably not just them, from what I’ve read about mountain lions they are extremely mobile. They require a large territory -that’s probably how he ended up crossing freeways. When the Cubs grow up and go out on their own, they need to find new territory. If they don’t then they usually starve or get killed by the mountain lions that “own” the territory they are in. With corridors being shut off due to urban sprawl, the Lions have nowhere to go.

They are a remarkable species, they can survive in anything between mountains and deserts. But they have to be able to get there first.

So the other 74 cats in the Santa Monica Mountains can go visit P22? And so maybe P22 can get lucky one evening with a new lady friend?

Sounds like a good use of $50M.

As grobdriver says above, “If he crossed the [two freeways] to get in, he can cross them to get out - if he wants to.” Cost of that? $0.

Cost of the Big Cat Lonely Hearts Club? $50M
