When it comes to TV ratings, the National Football League needs a Hail Mary.
Average game viewership has fallen to 15 million this season, down from 16.5 million last year, and the lowest since 2008, according to data compiled by RBC Capital Markets.
The firm also finds that the league's audience is down on a year-over-year basis, and notes that it hasn't seen meaningful growth since 2013, when the measure climbed 5%. RBC says this has had an adverse effect on how advertisers view the prospect of buying time slots during NFL games.
"The sustained decline is what worries investors about media's willingness to offload the NFL's monetization risk," analyst Steven Cahall wrote in a client note.

Dead cat bounce.
Now you understand why explaining things to democrats is an exercise in futility. If you were to poll all those NFL watchers, what is the spread on democrats to Republicans?
My daughter’s in laws always bought NFL merchandise for adult presents, they are not doing it this year. My daughter said the NFL merchandise is really on sale this year too.
I watched a business report, and they were interviewing a sports paraphernalia shop owner (around the Pittsburgh area). The gal-owner was still doing ok on baseball and basketball items, but it was dismal on NFL gear/shirts. She figured for Sep and Oct...she was running at 60-percent of the normal business trade, and feared that her best month (December) would go the same way. She could survive at that level but it was basically a zero profit quarter after she paid out all the bills.
The sad thing here is that the players don’t realize all the other people up and down the line who are part of this capitalist situation, and their gimmick is punishing a lot of honest people.
That yellow line in the graph is at the least, off-set.
1.5M * 16 games is 24 million fewer over the course of the season. That’s not nothing.
Wonder if there’s enough not locked into contracts that it’ll cause the cap to drop...or at least stop rising at 10% a year.
It’s not being reporting but they’re stuffing more and more commercials into the games. Reading the NFL threads on Reddit they’re pretty upset about it.
And the NFL's decision to pay ransom to these @$$hats has lost me as a fan forever. I'm done with the NFL. And I'll do my best to do without any of their sponsors' products.

I channel surfed on to the Saints game yesterday for a few minutes. The camera was focused to show only the field. They never wide panned the view to show the audience. It was intentional by the cameraman.
I was in a TJ Maxx store in NJ recently and there was tons of Jets and giants merchandise for sale, which would seem to indicate that there are problems selling the stuff at retail prices.
They will when the salary cap for the 2018 season is announced after the Super Bowl. I predict a 20% drop minimum, if not an outright drop from nine figures to eight. They'll get that message.
Thanks blam. The racist players of the NFL started by boycotting the country.
Absolutely! I did last year, also! A lot of folks tune in just to watch commercials. By boycotting, it definitely will hurt the advertisers!
BOYCOTT THE SUPER BOWL!!!!
YES!
The. NFL. Don't. Care.
Things are getting worse at a slower rate!
Blackball doesn’t sell
Exactly!
Dozens sat, knelt, arm fisted yesterday.

Spread on twitter, text, email, carrier pigeon, etc
I love the sight of empty NFL seats in the morning.
It looks like...Victory!
Boycott ‘em ‘til they fire Goodell and the protesting players.
We will win this.
