When it comes to TV ratings, the National Football League needs a Hail Mary.
Average game viewership has fallen to 15 million this season, down from 16.5 million last year, and the lowest since 2008, according to data compiled by RBC Capital Markets.
The firm also finds that the league's audience is down on a year-over-year basis, and notes that it hasn't seen meaningful growth since 2013, when the measure climbed 5%. RBC says this has had an adverse effect on how advertisers view the prospect of buying time slots during NFL games.
"The sustained decline is what worries investors about media's willingness to offload the NFL's monetization risk," analyst Steven Cahall wrote in a client note.

5%? Not exactly boffo box office. For a billion dollar mass media headliner.
Culture war against the NFL is the beginning stages of a bigger culture war. If people can’t bring it home here then when it gets hot may as well turn your backsides. Screw the NFL forever.
The number of brands committing suicide since the election of President Trump has been astounding.
“Hahaha. Merry Christmas you nfl losers!”
Got that right. Their holiday ads really suck.
I am over them
Colin Kapernink JAmmies? For reals?
I still cannot understand why so many people still watch the NF’nL.
This is the bottom line, and a lot of very hard-eyed marketeers are using their own private figures to tell the NFL that their companies aren’t going to pay premium prices for a declining exposure. Those private figures have no vested interest to be optimistic as the public ones do; rather the opposite. These are not patriots - some of them aren’t even American - but they’re not stupid and they’re paid to move product. They don’t care how the NFL fixes it but it needs to be fixed, now. If it can be. If it can’t, they’re not in the business of propping up losers.
I don’t think we’ve seen how low the ratings will go.
Lot of people watched because of gambling. That’ll take
time to transition to another sport. Many people are locked into season tickets.
It’s a gradual decline they are on now.
Taxpayers funded $7 billion worth of stadiums around the ocuntry. The political good will is gone now. Supporting the NFL will be a leftist cause - and leftists already hated the sport. It was about winning / masulniity / flyovers / cheerleaders.
Really a warning sign of what could happen to other sports.
The “uptick” is in the Year over Year percentage line. This means that NFL viewership is continuing to fall, but at a slower pace than it fell off last year. That is, as long as the yellow line stays below the 0%.
Yes, for real. The NFL Shop sells all kinds of merchandise. Trash cans, blankets, sheets, man-cave stuff. I had a friend who owned a pool table with all the teams as balls (Appropriately, being a Packers fan, the 8-ball was the Bears). My prediction is that holiday sales will be lower than last year's.
Yup, as long as the ratings continue to descend, it means the trend is our friend.
I’m with you!
Boycott the Super bowl.
BLM is the Super bowl fan base.
The NFL ...... Burned TOAST.
NFL? What’s that?
Gee, they might have cut players or renegotiate contracts. I’m broken-hearted.
I feel the same way about the NCAA. They are so corrupt. All of these issues could be resolved by granting no athletic scholarships until the applicant is accepted to the college on the basis of grades and SAT scores. Just like my son.
This would restore true student-athletes to the game. There would be no recruiting problems as there would be no recruiting until after acceptance. If an athlete gets accepted to three schools, then the coaches can have at it.
"A pair of high school cheerleaders from California earned high praise from National Public Radio for kneeling during the national anthem at their high school games."
"One was even highlighted for writing her own, Black Lives Matter-styled version of the Star Spangled Banner.
If true that's 91% of what it was last year. I don't believe it. I think our boycott is more effective than that.
