A former Marine colonel who served as General John Kelly's chief of staff says he will run as an independent write-in candidate in the upcoming Alabama Senate contest. Kelly currently serves as Donald Trump's chief of staff.
The announcement by retired colonel Lee Busby is just the latest twist in the Alabama Senate race that has been roiled by charges that the GOP candidate, Roy Moore, dated teenage girls.
Mr. Busby told the newspaper that he intends to run as an independent and rely on social media to promote himself.
"If this were a military operation, the left flank and the right flank are heavily guarded," he explained to The Post.
"I think that gives you an opportunity to run straight up the middle," he added.
The news comes as Republican candidate Roy Moore continues to face allegations of sexual misconduct while working as a district attorney in Alabama. Mr. Moore has been accused of pursuing relationships with teenage girls while he was in his 30s. He is facing Democratic challenger Doug Jones in a Dec. 12 special election.
Mr. Trump has praised Mr. Kelly for his military service and has shown a fondness for putting military members in positions of power in his administration. He has not commented about Mr. Busby's possible campaign at this time.
Busby's campaign will be just another sideshow in a race that Democrats believe they have a chance to win. But despite all the trouble that the charges of sexual misconduct have caused Moore, the Democrat in the race, Doug Jones, still faces a steep challenge. Jones is not a candidate to generate much excitement. He is a colorless, faceless candidate the Democrats put up

Moore is going to win in a landslide
The write in candidate reads like a GOP Inc fantasy candidate to run in the South.
It’s transparent. GOP Inc are complete asshats and they will fail.
A vote for this goof ball is avote for the communist.
According to liberals, Alabama residents are ignorant rednecks who can’t read or write. So the write-in candidate won’t hurt Moore at all.
Busby will get, like, 5,000 votes.
Apparrently the so called write in candidate is controlled by the Jones campaign. He had been seen at Jones campaign events and fund raisers before he announced.
It’s all the leftist freaks have left.
Good.
RE: Busby will get, like, 5,000 votes.
Large enough to make a difference? Hope not.
How often has a write-in candidate won an election?
Strom Thurmond in 1954; Joe Skeen of NM, I believe but don’t know the year
Well the short answer is NO! The long answer is HELL NO! Next question!
“How often has a write-in candidate won an election?”
Murkowski won as a write-in, but she was the incumbent.
Murkyowski won over the republican nominee in Alaska. However she was an incumbent who had bought lots of votes from big business and crossed over to the unions and natives for votes. I suspect she might be behind this as she already had suggested a write in candidate for Alabama. This guy can’t win but is a spoiler.
Isn’t that what McConnell and Haley Barber did in Mississippi?
Which is the exact intent as directed By the GROPelite corpse in McConnell's repubbie party inside Washington.
It is very, very clear that Moore IS the enemy of the Washington republicans in this election!
And, with this "selection" of an actual write-in candidate, the silencing of ANY potential republican senators who do not actively oppose Moore, and the uniform RINO use of "tribal" all weekend by the "officially released" authorized republican statements by Thune, Cocker, Graham, Flake, McCain and McConnell's other allies ... McConnell's war continues. (It was declared a few weeks back. Surprised Trump has not told McConnell to shut up.)
If anything it will hurt Jones by taking votes that might have been cast for him.
He can smoke all the stogies he wants but he’s plant and stooge if there ever was one.
