Rep. John Conyers Jr. (D-Mich.) announced he is stepping aside as the ranking member of the House Judiciary Committee pending an investigation into allegations of sexual harassment.
After careful consideration and in light of the attention drawn by recent allegations made against me, I have notified the Democratic Leader of my request to step aside as Ranking Member of the House Judiciary Committee during the investigation of these matters," he said in a statement on Sunday.
I deny these allegations, many of which were raised by documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger. I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics," he added.
Conyers's attorney last week maintained that the lawmaker would not resign from the post as the House Ethics Committee investigates into the allegations.
The Ethics Committee opened an investigation into Conyers after BuzzFeed News reported last week that Conyers settled a wrongful dismissal complaint in 2015 with a former employee who alleged she was fired because she would not "succumb to [his] sexual advances."
Other staffers alleged that he made requests for sexual favors, inappropriately touched staffers and used congressional resources to transport women that they believed he was having sexual relationships with at the time.
Shortly the report was published, another woman came forward with allegations that the lawmaker harassed and verbally abused her while she worked for him in the 1990s.
House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi (D-Calif.) in statement about Conyers's decision to step aside stressed that zero tolerance means consequences.
We must ensure the Congress has a climate of dignity and respect with zero tolerance, she added.
During an appearance earlier Sunday on NBC's "Meet the Press," Pelosi called Conyers an "icon" who deserves "due process."
Conyers, the longest-serving member of the House, has said he will "fully cooperate" with the Ethics Committee's investigation.
His announcement came after several Democratic lawmakers called for him to step down from his powerful post.
One of his House colleagues, Rep. Kathleen Rice (D-N.Y.) on Friday, also called for the Michigan lawmaker to resign amid the allegations.

This is what the DEMS are offering....that he step down as ranking Dem....he should be BLASTED out of Congress, and shamed forever, but the GOP will probably let it slide...
Guilty. If the claims are baseless and false, why step down?
Bump!
now franken will step off as well..
He knows more incriminating stuff is coming down........and so do his colleagues.
This is an admission of guilt. I demand the same punishment that the MSM stooges demand for Trump, burn him at the stake.
But hes been running the show for decades. The damage is done.
Guilty......Next please.
Surprised a white girl (Kathleen Rice), would demand a black man resign.
Way, to little
And way, to late
Lets git er done this month, folks!
Having House and Senate members investigated by their own “Ethics” committees is like being handed a “Get Out Of Jail Free” card. They know they’ll just get a slap on the wrist, if anything at all. The two houses of Congress are elite clubs and the members look out for each other, knowing they themselves might be targeted next for some indiscretion.
I agree. About the only time either Ethics Committee really sanctions a member is if the violation is so flagrant the members on the committee fear retaliation if they don’t act.
I hope they have a ton of stuff on Alcee Hastings and Elijah Cummings. Most of the RATs will probably take a hit.
“I very much look forward to vindicating myself and my family before the House Committee on Ethics”
You can “vindicate” yourself in jail, Conyers. Show ‘em how it’s done!
documents reportedly paid for by a partisan alt-right blogger. yeah ok it has nothing to do with you in your underwear
The Dumbocrats went after Moore thinking long term Trump.
What they came away with was the Franken and Conyer’s Cha-Cha.
A number of others have been damaged so far, and I suspect there will be still more to come.
Meanwhile, Moore and Trump are rising to the top.
I love when they play these games in this new era.
Maybe they are going to put up at least a nominal show of ethics (to grab the Alabama race).
But very little here - his is the cleanest-cut case yet, payoffs. Franken can still claim that he was a joker/clown...not saying I agree with that ‘defense’, but it does exist for him. Conyers has nothing.
