It's been over a year since the American election and what we hear in Canada coming from our old neighbour to the South is a thrum of discontent, not really about any single issue (they change so fast), more like baleful glaring across a great divide on everything.
Some days, we read news from the United States and congratulate ourselves on our tolerance and inclusiveness, on our Prime Minister's socks, on our acting in a way that the States doesn't seem to know how to do.
But mostly, it feels as if we've lost something that we didn't know we liked. We miss the American patriotism that seemed to rise above whatever Americans argued about. We miss the stature the U.S. President had around the world, an ability that crossed party lines to respond with dignity when bad things happened. Now, disagreements in the United States seem intractable, personal and political in the worst ways, it's not just politicians hurling rhetoric, even late-night comedians have lost their sense of humour.
Recently, my husband, Andrew, and I were in Florida. We noticed during friendly idle chats in line at Starbucks or in hotel elevators that mentioning we were Canadian prompted a sheepish grin and a comment such as, "Canada, yeah, it's a good place especially now." The last two words were often a sigh. We'd feel awkward, wanting to say the right thing, to make them feel better.
But in division there are two sides. We knew that other Americans we bumped into thought differently about our nationality, maybe even pitying us for our health-care system with our hospital patients apparently lined up out the door.

What's a European? French, Belgian, German, Dutch?
You just did it yourself.
Back packers go all over Europe.
Must I list each country separately?
Is there something you’re trying to say?
One more thing.
US RATs and Canadian socialists are practically the same thing. They are much closer in stripe than are RATs and conservatives.
Yes, they're all Europeans, just like we're all Americans..to the tip of Chile.
Yes, they are.
No, we’re not.
Good points, all. Yet one has only to look at CBC News & Canadian government officials to see the rivers of filth that they vomit upon the States on a regular basis to get a feel for the culture up there. We all know about their “show trials” for conservatives like Mark Steyn. There’s plenty of evidence that modern Canada is a hostile, leftist redoubt.
Why do people get like that? Of course we are.
People from Central America are not Asians, people from South America are not Africans.
Its a matter of geography, not politics.
A lot of Americans made it home because of our efforts from overseas.>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
It does not excuse Canadian ignorance about America and their faux smugness. The Canadian government is simply in place to retard Canadas potential, while Ontario and Quebec partake of the riches of a people exploted and held back.
Canadians have nothing to be smug about. Perhaps one day the present populist movement now sweeping the USA will invest Canada and bring her into the truly informed, civilized world. Instead Canada elects purple pompadours with dimples as a Prime Minister ( he’s got nice hair) but is just about as vacant and manipulative as they come, just like his socialist prick of a father. With Harper at least Canada was on the right track.A nation with 21 million people and a standing military of only 100,00 men and women who can be killed in two languages does not in the modern world long survive. ...without the USA, something Canadians are far too prone to smugly forget.
Really? >>>>>>>>>>>>>
Yes really.
For example monopolies like the Irving Empire from Eastern Canada would cease to exist. ( New Brunswick is a feudal estate of the Irving’s who control over a third of New Brunswick’s land mass.)
The continuing Family Compacts which dictate Canada’s politics would end.
And maybe then, just maybe, Canadians would pass a Constitution that has 1st and 2nd amendments. Then they would be justified in the faux smugness they now comically portray to the world at large, like strutting shitty-assed penguins learning to swim, mice that roared.
Even the Canadian flag is a socialist invention imposed on a divided nation. The nation abandoned the flag under which hundreds of thousands of Canadians have died at war, with hardly a whimper. Now they are also smug about that rag.Its actually historically humorous.
Canada is ruled by a government afraid of its own population. Look at what one has to do to acquire a “restricted weapon” such as a handgun or carbine rifle. Its actually laughable.
Hyper leftist reporting by the BBC about the USA is simple, because the political culture of Britain is the same as Canada’s....abandon the melting pot and welcome to the lock step disunity of an imposed cultural mosaic, while people who live in the Midlands are forced to defend their homes from invasion using spears and swords. Bullets have to be politically correct, you see, put into motion only by agents of Her Majesty, whose heart of gold is closer to Riyadh than to Essex.
Excuse the rant.>>>>>>>>>>>>
No need to excuse your post as a rant.
Yes, the Canada I once knew and loved is now isolated from the USA compared to say the 1950s and 1960s.. Very few Americans now travel to PEI for example.
Just to understand how deep the manipulation went, in 1969 Trudeau made Air Canada terminate the weekend flights from Halifax to Saint John, Fredericton and then Boston. This flight allowed Eastern Canadians to travel to Boston on a Friday night, shop on Saturday and hit the Bruins game in the evening and then after a sleep over, fly home on Sunday. The flight tickets only cost $250.00 back in the mid 60s.
Trudeau had a contempt and hatred for the USA as a socialist who thought that American freedoms were retrograde and inferior, and he ended those flights under the guise of “Canadian unification.” It actully isolated Canada from the USA and Canada made it easier to study and travel to France ( a joke.). One can see the devolution of American travel to Canada today, and also Canadians have been separated from America quite purposefully by the psychopompous Canadian government. Nobody speaks of it though.
And Canada treats President Trump with disrespect in the CBC press? Little Hollywood in Ottawa is about to get his a$$ handed to him. He earned it.
I am really getting to despise these progressive discovers other people are human beings revelations. Am I supposed to be grateful that some progressive now considers me human?
________________
first thing, they are not “progressives” they are leftists. Progressive is their chosen word to hide their deadly politics in a warm fuzzy forward thinking sounding name.
Second, they don’t consider conservatives human, they see that occasionally conservatives can act human-like.
If you ever want to enjoy a treat, visit the Rockwell Museum in Stockbridge Mass.
This is mainly true. Some Canadians know about Trump, the ones that rely on the legacy media for their information do not.
"This is because the CBC broadcasts negative CNN like news about President Trump. Why do you say would the CBC do that? Its simply, the CBC is funded and controlled by the federal government , and as a network it has a decidedly socialist , leftist bias."
The CBC (AKA the Communist Broadcasting Corporation) has morphed into the propaganda arm of the liberal party of Canada. It is populated by smug wannabe elites who think it is their job to lead the great unwashed into the brave new world of diversity. Very much like the legacy media in the US.
"The political class in Canada, whether NDP, Liberal or Conservative, has retarded the economy of Canada by imposing an oil export tax and refusing to build a transnational pipeline. This has been going on for over 40 years. Canadians are beginning to detest the political class in Canada, just as Americans do theirs."
No, there is no oil export tax. NAFTA prohibits an export tax on oil. Yes, there is an interprovincial crude oil pipeline. It starts in the oilfields and runs to it's eastern terminus in Sarnia where there is a large refinery complex. More pipelines are planned. Also, Canadians have disliked their elites for ever.
"The smugness of Canadians traveling in the USA is ignorance personified. Canada is a country that has screwed its population continually, it does not have operative guaranteed ,constitutional rights or a first or second amendment. The Canadian people are hard working, the country is full of natural resources. But Canadian politicians are the greatest *uckups in history, and have retarded Canada much loner than they should have, with the ample help of the CBC propaganda machine."
I am mainly in agreement here. The smug superiority Canadians feel is not something to be proud of, but much like the idea of "American exceptionalism", it is pounded into one from birth.
I certainly for one would work in Canada to bring the Trump populist movement into Canada’s federal electoral process. And I would start it in Alberta.
More pipelines are planned>>>>>>>>>>>>>>
But they will not be allowed to transit Quebec to the East coast.
Again a load of crock.
You understand that Albertan’s recently elected a radical NDP (socialist/communist party) premier and government, right?
I hope I didn’t give the impression that all Canadians are smug condescending elitists. Most are good and decent human beings, and would give you the shirt off their backs if needed. This is especially true of Western Canadians, however I’ve been told by many that this applies to the Maritimes (East coast) as well.
I guess its just the 10% or so, mostly from the GTA (Greater Toronto Area), that I find insufferable. In terms of condescension, smugness and downright hatred of all things American, these guys would make their New York counterparts blush.
Canadians in Quebec and Ontario are euro wannabe’s
They have no original thought than to copy europe and feel good about it
