A hunter fatally shot a New York woman after sundown on Wednesday after apparently mistaking her for a deer, local officials said.
The hunter, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Jadlowski, was not charged in the shooting, though he violated state law by hunting after sunset when he killed Rosemary Billquist, 43, who was walking her dogs in a field near the Pennsylvania border around 5:30 p.m.
Jadlowski killed her with a pistol, the Chautauqua County sheriffs office said, according to The Guardian. He apparently claimed that he thought Billquist was a deer when he fired about 200 yards away, according to the New York Post. An investigation is ongoing.

I shot my last two bucks with a S&W .357 w/8-3/8ths barrel.
Yeah, okay. I get it, you want to argue...
Okay, let’s argue. In the damn dark you can’t hit a woman sized target, first try at 200 yards freehand, I don’t care what kind of pistol you’re shooting.
“Maybe have to wait for a grand jury. If he isnt charged with negligent homocide or the equivalent, the people of that county should raise he** until he is.
Hunting and use of firearms entails responsibility.”
Preposterous on its face, Should be a summery execution of this jagoff.
FYI, this garbage: "In the damn dark you cant hit a woman sized target, first try at 200 yards freehand, I dont care what kind of pistol youre shooting," is not a coherent argument. It's nonsense babble.
What round was he firing?
200 Yards with a pistol is not outrageous. I killed a deer with a 44 mag pistol and iron sites at 120 yds. I fired hundreds of rounds in practice until I could hit a pie plate 9 out of ten times from a seated position at 100 yds. With a scoped pistol 200 yards is possible if your sighted in at the right range.

Obviously my economy with words in post number 3 caused you some emotional distress.. Get over it.
This guys story won’t hold water. Wait and see.
Another article provides a little more detail and perspective:
Says no charges have been filed yet, but they are weighing what charges might be filed.
There are pistols though designed for long range shooting, and chambered in rifle cartridges, and used for hunting.
The fact that he killed this woman shows that he was irresponsible.
But from 200 yards in the dusk (he had to see her to shoot at her), a woman and dog or dogs walking together might look a bit like a deer or two.
Really sad. They need to check for any connection between the two people.
Love that pistol. Accurate as hell.
You obviously need to reel in your ego if you think your public display of ignorance is going to cause me emotional distress.
"This guys story wont hold water. Wait and see."
I never said it would.
The type of weapon has zip to do with this tragedy, though. The hunter ought to be in serious trouble for it - unconfirmed target, either at dusk or after dark, he was breaking the law right there, as has already been noted.
The poor young lady might have helped herself if she'd worn blaze orange and/or carried a flashlight with her.
Tragic, nothing will bring her back.
Sad, however it turns out.
A 200 yard shot with a 26 inch rifle barrel isnt easy in bright sunlight. At dusk it becomes a marksman level shot. Im betting this guy wasnt carrying a 26 inch barrel pistol.
It is interesting isnt it? Putting aside this mans apparent horrible choices; this guy hit a moving (walking) target at 200 yds, with a pistol. You have to assume he was aiming (regardless of his failure to properly ID his target).
He must be a hell of a shot; or his story is utter bs.
Even after the deer seasons here, I always wear my blaze while outdoors.
Keeps the snow plows from hitting me while I’m shoveling.
" You obviously need to reel in your ego if you think your public display of ignorance is going to cause me emotional distress."
Probably a big .50 pistol. I cannot imagine shooting anything that size, at that distance.
Fired from a typical pistol, a 44 Magnum bullet drops around four feet in 200 yards. His story is bs.
