A hunter fatally shot a New York woman after sundown on Wednesday after apparently mistaking her for a deer, local officials said.

The hunter, identified as 34-year-old Thomas Jadlowski, was not charged in the shooting, though he violated state law by hunting after sunset when he killed Rosemary Billquist, 43, who was walking her dogs in a field near the Pennsylvania border around 5:30 p.m.

Jadlowski killed her with a pistol, the Chautauqua County sheriff’s office said, according to The Guardian. He apparently claimed that he thought Billquist was a deer when he fired about 200 yards away, according to the New York Post. An investigation is ongoing.

“Easily”? I don’t think so. This story reeks.

A 200 yard shot with a 26 inch rifle barrel isn’t easy in bright sunlight. At dusk it becomes a marksman level shot. I’m betting this guy wasn’t carrying a 26 inch barrel pistol.

Me. When I was living in Indiana we could not, by law, use a rifle for big game. We could, however, use a handgun. I shot a 125 pound (dressed out) buck with a 44 magnum Ruger Redhawk with Leupold scope.

It wasn't at 200 yards though.

Elmer Keith claimed to have killed an antelope at 600 yards with a 44 special (which he doubtless loaded to 44 mag specs).

Before you get to the point where you got to know what’s behind your target, you have to 1st know what your target IS. Pistols, 200 yard shots or getting dark don’t get you off the hook.

Hopefully you don’t shoot unconfirmed targets at any distance.

Too many holes in this story.

Deer hunting with a pistol after dark? 200 yards away?

Hunting after sundown, and obviously he didn’t clearly identify what he was shooting at. Totally irresponsible.

I have taken most of my deer in the last few years with my hand loaded Ruger Super Blackhawk .45 Colt although I limit my shots to about 50 yds. I enjoy the extra challenge of pistol hunting over using a rifle.

Weird details here. I live near here. Hunting with a pistol? After sundown? 200 yards? Suspicious.

Some high quality pistols (target or hunting) are accurate to 200 yards and can mount a scope equal to that of a rifle, but to use that accuracy would take a practiced hunter and a rested weapon.

Yes, some of this account raises suspicions.

A reasonably competent shooter with a scoped TC Contender in any number of calibers will easily put shots in the chest area of a deer sized target all day long at 200 yards and with the right choice of barrel and bullet will certainly bring down deer sized game at that range. It’s not a question of the right pistol’s ability. It’s a question of the hunter’s ability and willingness to only take responsible shots.

A friend of mine who lived in Maine once told me that,
"in Maine, all scores are settled in Deer Season"
Perhaps this tradition is practiced elsewhere.
Just ask'in.

File this one under 'There's something more to this story they're not telling us about' file..

Public outcry will result in this law breaker being charged. BANK ON IT. (Unless of course he's somehow connected to Hillary, the DemonRat party or the Deep State).

To an idiot shooting at a blur that is moving 200 yards away after sunset, what DOES NOT LOOK LIKE A DEER?

He is too stupid to be left out in public.

I won’t argue the ability of custom pistols to hit a target at 200 yards (from a bench, on a target range, under ideal conditions. That ain’t what we’re discussing.
