In the Army, where I have the privilege of serving, theres an unspoken rule that no service member celebrates Thanksgiving alone. If word gets out that a soldier doesnt have a place to go for the holiday, other soldiers will invite him or her to share a meal and celebrate.
Our creed to never leave a fallen comrade isnt just meant for times of war; its a way of life. All soldiers are reminded that they are members of a tight-knit community a bond thats becoming increasingly rare in todays society.
While its nearly impossible to duplicate the closeness of a military community outside the armed forces, I wonder how much our country as a whole could benefit at least from a renewed spirit of camaraderie in our local neighborhoods.
Thanksgiving is a day where Americans from across the political spectrum can support each other. A moment where communities can finally show solidarity for a change. A holiday where individual citizens can recalibrate themselves to what matters.
I dont expect neighborhoods to reach the level of camaraderie found in the military. Thats an experience reserved for the few of us who make the commitment to serve. But I do believe that the hope of our country depends on the strength of our communities. And I have an enduring hope that a season of renewal is on the horizon.

The best Thanksgiving meal I ever had was on Camp Casey in Korea. The colonel in charge of that unit also ran the division replacement depot and he would commandeer any civilian chef school graduates for his mess hall. Gourmet food, ice sculptures, beer and wine, etc.
A special thanks to our armed forces (and their families) for their service to America, and their sacrifices while defending our nation from our enemies.
America thanks you, and we thank God for you!
Being a Barracks Rat for the first 6 years of my military career and being over 1,100 miles from home I ate a lot of Holiday Meals in Mess Halls (Now DFACs).
Thanksgiving was always the big one. The rest of the Holidays were somewhat better than the regular days.
Thanks Oldeconomybuyer. I hope everyone has a great Thanksgiving.
