~ Hall of Heroes ~Herschel F. Briles
Story from this website. |
|
Herschel F. Briles (February 7, 1914 – July 17, 1994) was a United States Army soldier and a recipient of the United States military's highest decoration—the Medal of Honor—for his actions in World War II.
Briles joined the Army from Fort Des Moines, Iowa, and by November 20, 1944 was serving as a Staff Sergeant in Company C, 899th Tank Destroyer Battalion. On that day, near Scherpenseel, Germany, he left cover to rescue the wounded crew of a burning tank destroyer and extinguish the vehicle's flames. The next day, he single-handedly forced the surrender of fifty-five German soldiers and again left cover to reach a burning tank destroyer, rescue its crew, and put out the flames. For these actions, he was awarded the Medal of Honor ten months later, on September 10, 1945.
Briles reached the rank of first sergeant before leaving the Army.
He died at age 80 and was buried in Waveland Cemetery, Prairie City, Iowa.
|
Briles' official Medal of Honor citation reads:
He was leading a platoon of destroyers across an exposed slope near Scherpenseel, Germany, on 20 November 1944, when they came under heavy enemy artillery fire. A direct hit was scored on 1 of the vehicles, killing 1 man, seriously wounding 2 others, and setting the destroyer afire. With a comrade, S/Sgt. Briles left the cover of his own armor and raced across ground raked by artillery and small-arms fire to the rescue of the men in the shattered destroyer. Without hesitation, he lowered himself into the burning turret, removed the wounded and then extinguished the fire. From a position he assumed the next morning, he observed hostile infantrymen advancing. With his machinegun, he poured such deadly fire into the enemy ranks that an entire pocket of 55 Germans surrendered, clearing the way for a junction between American units which had been held up for 2 days. Later that day, when another of his destroyers was hit by a concealed enemy tank, he again left protection to give assistance. With the help of another soldier, he evacuated two wounded under heavy fire and, returning to the burning vehicle, braved death from exploding ammunition to put out the flames. By his heroic initiative and complete disregard for personal safety, S/Sgt. Briles was largely responsible for causing heavy enemy casualties, forcing the surrender of 55 Germans, making possible the salvage of our vehicles, and saving the lives of wounded comrades.
Thank you sir, for your service and sacrifice for our country!

Take a Number
November 20, 2017
Peace I leave with you; my peace I give to you.
John 14:27
We have an ancient cherry tree in our backyard that had seen better days and looked like it was dying, so I called in an arborist. He checked it out and declared that it was unduly stressed and needed immediate attention. Take a number, my wife, Carolyn, muttered to the tree as she walked away. It had been one of those weeks.
Indeed, we all have anxious weeksfilled with worries over the direction our culture is drifting or concerns for our children, our marriages, our businesses, our finances, our personal health and well-being. Nevertheless, Jesus has assured us that despite disturbing circumstances we can be at peace. He said, My peace I give to you (John 14:27).
Jesuss days were filled with distress and disorder: He was beleaguered by His enemies and misunderstood by His family and friends. He often had no place to lay His head. Yet there was no trace of anxiety or fretfulness in His manner. He possessed an inner calm, a quiet tranquility. This is the peace He has given usfreedom from anxiety concerning the past, present, and future. The peace He exhibited; His peace.
In any circumstances, no matter how dire or trivial, we can turn to Jesus in prayer. There in His presence we can make our worries and fears known to Him. Then, Paul assures us, the peace of God will come to guard [our] hearts and [our] minds in Christ Jesus (Phil. 4:7). Even if weve had one of those weeks, we can have His peace.
Dear Lord, thank You that I can come to You with every care and Your peace will guard my mind.
In the midst of troubles, peace can be found in Jesus.
Thank God that you can take your cares to Him in prayer and ask Him to help you commit your situation to His care.

Unlike the Germans, we knew how to improvise on the battlefield.

It was raining this morning, and I nearly despaired of getting Blue to Bro’s and yet another weekend lost...then about noon, the sky cleared up and the TV said it was 51 out! Huzzah! So I called Sis, but they were out shopping so I had to wait an hour, during which the temp dropped 5 degrees.
No worry...I suited up and walked Penny, then tested the bike to make sure it would run...no problem, gathered up my stuff and rode to my sister’s house. Then we caravaned to Bro’s, during which time the sun dropped to the horizon, the wind picked up, and the temp dropped another 5 degrees and kept dropping as I rode. I could see the ponds and puddles freezing up as I rode. I saw one other rider on the road, and we bonded in instant solidarity with each other’s suffering.
After 26 miles of grueling endurance, I rolled into my Bro’s heated garage, where Blue will get a complete winterizing treatment and spend the the next few months in hibernation.
My thanks to my Sis and BIL was that I treated them to dinner in a new place we had never been before, and we had some great wine and food and companionship.
We are all too tired to go to Sunday Pub Nite tonight so the South Shore Music Community shall have to muddle through the evening without us!
We’ll always have Tuesday!
Did I mention to you that I HATE Winter?

One of my sisters wants to read AS, so I will give her my copy AND your book for Christmas. Since she has never read AS before, I know that your book will greatly enhance her experience!

Good evening, ML...((HUGS))...you have mentioned your feelings about winter before. d:o)
So glad you got Blue into hibernation...she can relax now, and you can too.
Glad you survived the trip and sounds like dinner was a fun and tasty reward for a job well done.
We got a couple inches of snow and nights are going to drop into single digits for the next few days.

I had a book on Amazon for a while and I made more money selling it out of the trunk of my car.
It was all sheet music of Blues Riffs for Piano.
