It's not the first time N. Korean leader's stupid directive caused a disaster. His grandfather Kim Il-sung issued a directive to strip vegetation off mountain slope and turn it into fields, in order to solve chronic food shortage. Instead of creating carefully managed terraced field, their field looked like a ski slope making it easy for rainwater to pour down slope and ruin much of field on the flat land during rainy season. This resulted in the massive famine in 90's. Although Kim Jong-un's directive may not be as catastrophic as his grandfather's, it is still another big disaster.

N. Korea had been using human feces for their farming, but N. Korean regime apparently pushed it to extreme, requiring each person to provide 1 ton of manure using human feces.

IIRC, the ROK used human feces on the crops during my time there for Uncle Sam in 1992. We were told not to eat vegetables from the farms because of the use of human waste as fertilizer. It was almost a guarantee that you’d get really sick.
