“I grabbed a handful of ammunition and started loading my magazine,” Willeford added.

There’s a lesson in here.

Pay attention.

That being said, prayers up for this fine and brave man.

"You were not God's model when he created the rest of humanity...get over yourself. "

What a goofy answer! Of course, I'm "God's Model", exactly as he designed me. And I'm thankful to Him - he kept me alive.

I'm going to go out on a limb here and suggest that your time in the army didn't include direct combat, did it?

Mr. Willeford also regrets not saving more.

May Jesus heal his heart and this brave man’s sorrows.

Nope, never said I did. But I have counseled those who did and that's why I take offense at your comment

"but the handwringing is unseemly.

I have never lost a night's sleep over what I had to do.

Good for YOU Rambo.........tough guys like you are rare.........

As a side note Rambo, Mr. Willeford is just an average citizen who never experienced combat such as you are bragging about. So cut him some slack..............Sheesh!

Dear Mr. Willeford:

I offered a prayer on your behalf to God. Let not your heart be troubled. The way I see it you had no choice, God chose you to be at that place at that time with the skill set you have. It was his design, like everything else. Thank him, you answered the call.

Sincerely,
Mad

As a post script, the fellow vets that I have talked with never once bragged about their Vietnam experiences, let alone criticized any actions of their fellow companions.........

In fact, it was quite the opposite. Virtually all of them who lost companions were reluctant to talk about it....

“but there was at least a real possibility that others would have died”

In Mr. Willeford’s interview with Stephen Crowder, he said the shooter’s vehicle was full of weapons and ammunition when he went off the road. In the direction he was headed there’s another Baptist church just a mile or two ahead. Who knows what plans, if any, he might’ve had in mind for that place?

That’s what I understood, too. The shot that actually killed the shooter probably was a suicide shot. If true, I hope that will serve to help Mr. Willeford in dealing with what happened. His shots most likely did serve to disable him to the point where he went off the road.

What you call "bragging" is me describing my experiences. I did experience it exactly as I have described.

I couldn't tell you what your buddies experienced - everyone has a different aspect of their war. I served in combat for 17 months and spent the next year recovering from a nearly fatal wound.

Very few people have experienced what I have and lived through it.

Hence, I find all the "feel sorry for me" crap useless.

God be praised, Stephen Willeford subdued further evil.

Correction noted. Prayers for Stephen Willeford. May he realize that what he did was right.

I agree. Being a biker and a prolific shooter and hunter, I like him more now. It isn’t something easy to deal with, but the guy apparently isn’t seeking publicity, so he needs to be left alone.

Right after the event, he said he felt the presence of God aiding and directing him. It’s not easy living with the aftermath of such a horrifying event.
