Moore, Trump and the Right’s New Religion
New York Times ^ | 11/16/2017 | Charles M. Blow

I have lived my whole life with a Republican Party with which I disagreed, but at least understood.

The first election I can remember was the presidential election of 1980. I was 10 years old. I didn’t know much about politics or party platforms. I only knew that the former peanut-farmer president, Jimmy Carter, was running against a former actor, Ronald Reagan.

But it was in that election that Jerry Falwell and his Moral Majority reintroduced religious activism into American politics. Speaking at a Dallas convention of Christian fundamentalists, Falwell proclaimed: “During the 1980s, preachers, we have a threefold primary responsibility. No. 1: Get people saved. No. 2: Get them baptized. No. 3: Get them registered to vote.”

The religious activism was in many ways a direct response to the strides made in the 1960s and 1970s on racial equality, women’s rights and gay rights.

In a way, their driving motivation was to make religious law into American law, really not so unlike the Shariah law they so fear and despise.

My brothers and I stayed up late with my mother to watch the returns on election night in 1980. When it was clear that the actor had beaten the farmer, my mother quietly left the room, and an air of solemnity and sadness filled it.

For the three decades that followed, I could count on one thing: the conservative right was the religious right. That was its branding, if not always its behavior. It was as if the foot soldiers for the conservative right had read only half of the Bible they thumped. They were harsh and vindictive like the God of the Old Testament, not generous and inclusive like the Jesus of the New Testament.

Then there were the hypocrites, condemning sexual liberation while being secretly lascivious, their railing against gays later exposed as a form of gay panic.

But now, all the pretense of any “moral” majority and “moral” authority has vanished into the very impulses that fed it: Tribal racial/ethnic anxiety, panic and hostility, patriarchy and sexism, and a perceived threat presented by the full acceptance and inclusion of L.G.B.T. identities.

Piety is now postscript. The principal motivation now is anger, fear of cultural displacement, and anxiety about the erosion of privilege and the guarantees it once provided, from physical safety to financial security.

Lecture on Christianity from the New York Times. How many Christians are on their editorial board? My guess is zero.

The only thing Trump and Moore supporters are doing is holding on to what’s normal.

This includes rejecting the new age religion of good is evil and evil good.

Explaining religious conviction and how it shapes one’s worldview is like me explaining calculus to my eight-year-old.

Actually, my eight-year-old is pretty bright...

“In my view Moore is guilty as accused. But 1) it happened 30 years ago, & 2) he can’t be removed from the ballot,

Gee, I wonder what he has to say about the Photographic Evidence showing Senator Al Franken Sexually Assaulting a sleeping woman for sexual gratification.

What a load of drek.

Lectures on how stupid “religious” Republicans from this hyperbolically pious dork who is much more orthodox and closed minded than any Christian.

The Communists stood side by side when all the women came forward and accused Bill Clinton of rape. Every one of them was destroyed.

I learned my lesson well from them.

They post this story every few years.

They we’re literally saying the same thing in the 80s.

It’s all a lie to snooker young voters.

"Charles M. Blow"

Stopped reading right there. Fellatiate Chuck has no moral standing to criticize anything.

***WARNING***

NYT = Not Yielding to Truth

Don’t believe these Lying Leftist Media outlets that proved themselves during the 2016 campaign to be operatives of the DNC and intentional liars. They are presumed to be lying and we should presume what they publish is a lie. The presumption can only be rebutted with the outlet providing clear and convincing evidence they are not lying.

Why post this OP-ED b/s ("opinion as news") from a known Lying Leftist outlet other than demoralize the readers? We should be mostly publishing the truth on FR, not the lies, and as much good news as possible to bolster morale. We should find and post reasonably reliable sources that have already deconstructed the lie and replaced it with the truth and with a headline that says the truth. At least get the story from a relatively reliable source, not from a known Lying Leftist operative posing as a “news” organization.

I voted in that election. I voted for the 3rd party candidate John Anderson. Why did I do so? Because I was a dumbass who didn’t know squat about politics (but I didn’t know that then). As the years passed, I smartened up some and now view Reagan as one of the great Presidents. Too bad Charles Blow is still the same dumbass he was in 1980.

What this writer needs to learn is that personal intent resides in the person. In other words, if Judge Moore didn’t assault anyone forty years ago, then that truth can’t be changed.

No matter how many people try to talk it into being a reality.

Funny thing is, the left never said we were pious. We were always branded fear and hate monsters.

This writer is lying.

When a person starts to tell you about their political beliefs and they mention sorrow at Reagan beating Carter in 1980, just stop them.

You already know all you need to.

Just say, “Oh yeah, I know.”, and change the subject as fast as you can.

Tell them you once saved a dolphin. That should do the trick.
