The Independent news website has published an article arguing that Brexit supporters should think twice about wearing a poppy as they have effectively betrayed war heroes by voting to leave the European Union (EU). Many Brexiteers claim to honour the victims of war while denigrating the very institutions set up to prevent future wars, showing themselves to be historically illiterate at best, claims author John Lubbock.
In Lubbocks view, the EU in one of the primary legacies of the World Wars and without it the continent risks returning to conflict.
The Independent article also links the pro-Brexit camp to the Paradise Papers and claims that socialist policies, such as the welfare state, are effectively a product of the wars, implying that not believing in them is a further betrayal of war heroes.
People have forgotten the lessons we learned from the world wars and after Brexit they may be well on their way to creating a world in which theyll get to relive the horror of World War One, the article claims.

So, which generation of Brits who fought to avoid a Europe dominated by Germany did they betray?
Seems like the same argument was made for reestablishing the Roman Empire, way back when........................
Brexit supporters are the heroes in Great Britain because they do not want to be part of the one Germany that Hitler was trying to create.
The EU is well on its way to being totally under the control of the Germans. Is that not so?
Those war heroes of the Boar War, WWI and WWII for whom the poppies are worn were British not part of the EU when they fought and died for England...
they must be rolling over in their sometimes unknown graves..
If you read the independent it might be a good idea leave the country. Before patriotism and Justice take hold.

There are only two threats to Europe’s peace these days: radical Islam, and (maybe) Russia. The EU obviously could not stop a Russian attack. That’s the job of NATO. And the EU is actually helping the Islamists.
Open borders = mass illegal immigration = goodbye, Europe
My New Zealand born uncle died in Italy, Christmas, 1944...5 of his brothers fought in the Pacific, 3 as coast watchers...my mother lost 3 uncles at Gallipoli..my father’s brothers fought in WWII one inlisted secretly at age 14...
as a Brownie and Girl Guide I gave out poppies and participated in the ceremonies with wreathes at our town Cenotaph every year on Armistice Day and ANZAC Day, (April 25)
That Cenotaph had a list of men from our town who were killed in WWI and WWII including a young man who died the Japanese POW camp called Devil’s Island (he was beheaded)
I can testify that Britain was not part of the EU during the 1950s...it would have been unthinkable ...
we were still in “There will always be an England” mode...and Rule Britannia, Britannia rules the waves, England never ever ever will be slaves...
The EU doesn't prevent future wars. It buys peace in our time at a terrible price later. I would hope that at least the UK would have learned that lesson, and the Brexit vote provides some support for my hope. I just pray that they don't forget why they voted for Brexit.
Stupid tossers don’t even understand or acknowledge they are in a war right now! Hundreds of thousands of muslims are swarming into the EU and fundamentally changing the societies and way of life within the various EU nations. 25 -35 years from now there will be no EU. No Europe at all if they don’t wake up and right soon!

I suspect if the real war heroes wanted in the EU, they could have just let Hitler win.
Uh huh. In related news, Germany is planning war game scenarios where they fight EU countries that break free. Join our peace initiative or face extermination!
Plenty of deadbeat beggars pretending to be homeless vets out though...on really fat gal had a faux cammo jacket on to give credence to her cardboard sign - I'm not sure they make them that would fit her as part of the official uniform...
