New Jersey Gov.-elect Phil Murphy said he would legalize marijuana within 100 days of taking office in January, and his Tuesday win makes a Democrat-packed statehouse the only obstacle.
Supporters feel confident it will happen, but legalization foes plan to campaign for Democratic defections as the other side debates different visions for reform.
Legalization in the state — across the river from both New York City and Philadelphia — would be significant geographically, but also because no state has passed legalization legislatively, despite Gallup putting national support at 64 percent.

Legalize child molestation. Lower the voting age. Bring in our enemies and leave the border open.
We go back to a freer country, much the way it was in 1937 (when the first federal MJ prohibition law was passed) and earlier. Let's fight the right battles ... advocating for continuing to lock people up for weed is not the right battle.
With all the big Pharms in NJ it will be interesting to see if he can pull this off.
Look at it this way.
In the south the style of living is reversed from the north.
In the north people put up with the cold weather of winter, run the heater, and wait for spring, summer and fall.
If you move to the south you adjust your lifestyle by six months.
You work your way through summer with the air conditioner and iced tea (or something stronger) and do your high living in the fall, winter and spring.
In the north the best time for a back yard barbecue is the height of summer.
In the deep south the worst time for a back yard barbecue is the height of summer.
More times than not, northerners who move to the south and try to live the northern time cycles are the ones who give up and move back north.
Those that make the seasonal adjustment learn to enjoy the life.

Voters in NJ knew this was something this guy wanted to implement if he became governor.
It will be interesting to see how legal cannabis looks in NJ vs the other legal states.
You need to check with your Dallas-resident son or maybe one of your former neighbors who have decamped to NC, SC, or FL about this guy Carrier and his fantastic invention in the last century of air conditioning. The other FReeper who pointed out the activity shift in your calendar was also right on the mark. We really don’t melt into puddles of goo from May-September.
My family goes back many generations in New Jersey. The absolute best thing my wife and I have done for ourselves was to move to PA in 2004. I still work in Pburg. The 45 mile each way commute is worth every second of my time.

All I know is that it took me over 20 years to get sober, and I thank God for the help.
Life is hard, often even for the young...but having a clear head can really help.
We have visited our son and his family 2 or 3 times a year over the 8 years they’ve been in Dallas. In every case but one, we have gone in November, January or February, and the weather was always much nicer in Texas than New Jersey.
When their youngest child was born, they had her baptism in August (2011) during a tremendous heat wave. We stayed for 10 days and the daily high was never less than 110. I understand that this was a somewhat unusual occurrence, but as one who likes to be outdoors, I spent the entire time thanking Mr. Carrier for his foresight.
My next-door neighbors have adopted the snowbird solution, living in NJ from May to November and Florida from November to May. But, as he has mentioned to me quite often, it is very expensive, not to mention the hassle of moving back and forth.
The Dallas summers are not a deal breaker for me. Just another data bit in the overall equation. I am not a stranger to warm southern weather, having been stationed in Biloxi, MS, and the Florida Panhandle for my entire 4-year Air Force service. Most of the time, the weather was great, and the summers quite bearable.
Glad you’ve made the visit a few times including the August reality check. I’m in NE OK so a slight difference from Dallas but not much difference most times. This past August was very cool when compared to normal with maybe only a day or two over 100 degrees for us. As far as the snowbird solution, I really can’t fathom how so many are able to afford that but understand the pull of a long-time home that they don’t want to give up. More FReepers are always welcome out here in the southwest part of the US so I hope your decision brings you here soon.
Thanks very much. Our son, who is 42, and was born and raised in New Jersey, has become very Texafied in his time down there. He competes in “run and shoot” biathlons, winning a slew of Gold, Silver, and Bronze medals. He’s wiry, can run, scramble over obstacles, and is accurate with both pistol and rifle. He has competed in Oklahoma several times, and last year, he and a buddy initiated their own event, deliberately double-entendred, the WTF Biathlon. It stands for Waco Tactical Fitness (among other things) and has been a huge success, raising thousands of dollars for charity. And it all started when I taught him how to shoot a BB gun, when he was about 6.

Pot would remain illegal for kids. Since kids have been reporting for years that they can get pot (illegal for all) more easily than cigarettes or beer (legal for adults), it appears that the best way to keep a drug out of kids' hands is to legalize it for adults - which gives sellers an incentive to restrict their sales to adults.

I’m glad your son has so readily adapted to his TX surroundings and the recreational shooting opportunities. The charity event he and his friend have started sounds like a very worthy endeavor. My time for participation in those events is behind me, especially since “wiry” was never a word used to describe me. I still enjoy shooting and took a course earlier this year with Massad Ayoob, a name you might know from the shooting world.
Drug prohibition does far less to impede self-fogging than it does to enrich violent criminals - with all the ills that entails.
