New Jersey Gov.-elect Phil Murphy said he would legalize marijuana within 100 days of taking office in January, and his Tuesday win makes a Democrat-packed statehouse the only obstacle.
Supporters feel confident it will happen, but legalization foes plan to campaign for Democratic defections as the other side debates different visions for reform.
Legalization in the state — across the river from both New York City and Philadelphia — would be significant geographically, but also because no state has passed legalization legislatively, despite Gallup putting national support at 64 percent.

And delusional progressives on RCP didn’t like it one bit, here’s some response-
“The irony is huge here given how Trump rides on the economy boom caused by Obama .......” and the usual “Obama entered office right at the time the biggest financial crisis erupted globally and was able to hand over a robust economy with constantly decreasing unemployment rates, with long term sustainability in terms of energy by investing to renewable resources and getting away from fossil fuels......”
They’ve already disarmed NJ, so now they seek to create a whole state full of stoned, prohibited possessors, dependent on the government for their drugs and their munchies. The perfect Democrat constituency.
That’s what I was wondering. If he sees it as nothing more than something deserving minimal regulation, like alcohol. In fact, I would expect that. Otherwise, he’s a hypocrite.
My 21 year old son drinks. I wouldn’t want him using marijuana. Maybe I’m just old fashioned. But that’s me.
I really would like to find out what Murphy thinks.
Does the NJ government permit the people to pump gas into their own car? If not, then maybe the Governor-elect could start with that.
If I had to live in NJ, I think I’d want to stay baked.
My wife of 46 years and I live in the “Garden State.” We’re both retired. We have 3 grown children, each of whom has three of their own. Two kids (and thus 6 grandkids) live within an hour of us, in NJ and Brooklyn. Our third child lives north of Dallas with his family.
The Dallas son has been proselytizing for years, trying to get us to move there. I’m finding it increasingly difficult to justify living in NJ, a state with a high income tax, very high property taxes, loony liberals at every level of government, nasty traffic, expensive tolls (we spend almost $30 round-trip on tolls each time we visit our daughter in Brooklyn), ugly winters, the virtual impossibility of owning a gun for protection, and now, with the new tax proposals, potentially losing a few of the tax breaks that make living here manageable.
We could replace our house with one in Texas for about half the cost, and do away with most of the aforementioned problems. The main negatives, of course, are being away from 2/3 of our family, not to mention various other relatives in the northeast, plus the awful Dallas summers. And, having lived here for close to 40 years, losing contact with the nice group of close friends in our circle. A couple of years ago, I wouldn’t have even considered it, but as the political climate grows worse, I am leaning towards making the move. Either that, or just sitting on my back porch smoking marijuana all day in order to forget what a hellhole this has become.
I’d greatly appreciate any comments or suggestions relative to my dilemma. The son who lives nearby, in NJ, has mentioned that he is considering making the move as well. Should he do so, that would put 2/3 of the grandkids in Texas, and make the decision a lot easier.
I am probably one of several million conservatives who is living in a high-tax, left-wing state (as most high-tax states are) who is struggling with the same, or a similar dilemma.
Keep the serfs indoctrinated and give them free access to dope and sex with anything that moves (or looks like it could move)
and they’ll vote democrat every election - whether they know it or not.
No, we’re still not allowed to pump our own gas. Actually, most of the time, unless the gas station is extremely busy, I appreciate not having to get out of the car.
Legalizing pot. Yeah, that is a major priority for NJ. /s
Used to live in CO; I may be wrong but I think there are more traffic accidents since they legalized it.
And NJ has much more traffic than CO, I believe, given its proximity to NYC.
Oh, and Tangled—as for your comment about his kids—adolescent brains are still developing until the early 20’s. If a young person has certain genes, smoking pot can even contribute to mental illness. It is really not healthy.
I once wrote a book on a killer in CA and he was a heavy marijuana user as a teen; it contributed to his psychosis.
I stand to be corrected, however.
If you are retired, Pennsylvania doesn't tax pensions, IRA distributions and Social Security -- without limit, unlike the People's Republic of New Jersey. Like Texas, a house costs 1/2 as much. PA is 2A friendly, too.
If there is any better proof, the State of New Jersey prohibited state employees from living in Pennsylvania decades ago.
I love the NJ beaches, pizza and tomatoes. But enough is enough.
President Trump has a pied-à-terre here, but he doesn't live in New Jersey full time.
The democrats want this as they know dopers end up lazy and on the dole.
Holy cow! That is amazing that they can do that.
I bet, however, that there are some that have NJ addresses, for their paychecks, but actually live in PA.
